View on GoogleShieikan was a Tennen Rishin-ryu swordsmanship dojo located in the city of Edo at the end of the Edo period, said to have been founded in Tenpo 10 by Kondo Shusuke, the 3rd head of Tennen Rishin-ryu and adoptive father of Kondo Isami. In Bunkyu 1, Isami succeeded as the 4th head, but when Isami went to Kyoto, Sato Hikogoro and shogunate retainer Terao Yasujiro looked after it, and it continued until Keio 3. Members who would later form the core of the Shinsengumi had already gathered at this dojo: among its disciples were Hijikata Toshizo, Okita Soji, Inoue Genzaburo, and Yamanami Keisuke, and among its resident guests were Nagakura Shinpachi, Harada Sanosuke, and Todo Heisuke (according to “Roshi Bunkyu Hokoku Kiji”), among others. Its exact location has not been confirmed, but a marker post now stands beside the Inari shrine behind Yanagi-yu.
