An izakaya on a side street a little way up Kagurazaka. It has a down-to-earth atmosphere even for this area. The entrance enclosed by vinyl curtains feels open, and inside is an old-fashioned izakaya space with a TV playing. An experienced staff member showed us in. The menu was divided into various categories, including vegetables, shrimp, eggs, ajillo, meat, and rice dishes. We ordered 【Our homemade pickled napa cabbage】450円【Meat croquette】650円【Chicken confit】1,180円 + drinks and the otoshi arrived first, after about 1 minute. The otoshi was a quiche-like omelet, with fluffy, meltingly soft eggs and savory and sweet flavors from bacon, onions, and so on. It was delicious. The pickled napa cabbage was a little salty, but as a drinking snack, the balance was just barely acceptable. The meat croquette was thoroughly fried with a light coating, and the smooth mouthfeel and fluffy texture of the finely mashed potatoes were delicious and kept the beer flowing. However, despite being called a meat croquette, it was disappointing that I couldn't really taste the texture or savoriness of minced meat or other meat. Chicken confit uses a French cooking technique that's unusual for an izakaya like this. This dish used chicken thigh rather than duck, well roasted with garlic and fat, and we thoroughly enjoyed the very fragrant, tender texture and savory flavor of the chicken. Various aromatic vegetables seemed to have been roasted too, adding sweetness and flavor. It seemed like a dish that would go well with white wine. There are so many menu items that it's hard to choose, but I'd like to return to try more of the small plates.

We were looking for a second stop in Kagurazaka where we could chat over a few drinks and happened to walk in here. The WBC happened to be on, and the regulars inside were really excited, so we had a very fun time. There wasn't much of a sake selection, which was a little disappointing as a sake fan, but the homemade pickled napa cabbage was delicious. With so many stylish, formal-feeling places in Kagurazaka, I thought it was nice to have somewhere this casual. The interior is fairly small, and the next table feels very close. The staff are very friendly.

Turn into an alley off Kagurazaka itself, the street connecting Iidabashi Station and Kagurazaka Station, and peek down it to see a red lantern. That's 喰家. At this compact restaurant, the friendly staff greet you cheerfully. It's just the right size and feels like a place where you can relax without standing on ceremony, something rare in Kagurazaka. The food is izakaya fare, with just the things you'd want to eat. Once you know about it, you'll probably keep coming back. It's that kind of place.
