Delicious Ainu and Hokkaido food from one of the few Ainu restaurants in Japan (and the world)—especially loved the roasted venison. The dish portions are on the smaller side, izakaya-style, but a bit bigger than some izakaya portions I’ve seen. Unfortunately, they ran out of kitopiro (wild garlic, famous for its pungency)—and are only restocking in May. But I got to try a lot of other dishes. (Notes that most of the Ainu food section are potato-based carbohydrates that should be paired with other dishes). The roasted venison with wasabi (a yellow, wild version?) was especially delicious. Recommend making a reservation in advance (perhaps by hotel concierge if you are staying at a hotel and can’t speak Japanese), because I was turned away at around 7:30 PM—then I got a reservation for 5 PM the next day, which was how I could eat here.
View on GoogleVery interesting and unique restaurant. If you are a Golden Kamuy fan this is a must try. There is a lot of anime related memorabilia and traditional Ainu artifacts in the room. We came right at opening for dinner with out reservation and sat down immediately. It was a little bit confusing since the restaurant didn't actually open the door until a bit after opening. Food was very good, a lot of dishes I haven't found anywhere else in Japan. Portions are a little small, for 2 people we spent around 10k.
View on GoogleWe went early, and it was half full at opening time. It’s very popular for a good reason! The food is the best I’ve had so far in Japan! It feels like a family run business, few people running it, and cute/quirky decor. It’s a small space to run such a phenomenal restaurant, but they make it work on sheer goodwill and pleasant interactions. We had venison steak (amazing) fried chicken, mashed fried various types of potatoes (yes, mashed AND fried), and vegetable soup with fish broth. I had sake poured generously over flowing into a wood cup. We didn’t see any desserts but honestly we were full anyway, and it was all delicious! To really win our hearts, we asked for help finding a taxi because it’s in a out-of-the-way place, and the owner not only took us out of the restaurant, lending us an umbrella to use, and taking us to the main street and found us a taxi! He even told the taxi driver our hotel name! We had such a memorable experience! Thank you! ❤️
View on GoogleIn a city as big as Tokyo it's surprising they only have one restaurant serving Ainu cuisine, but Harukor is it and it's excellent! We visited for lunch. The menu is extensive and has options to suit most tastes. The venison bowl was really good. The owner does a fantastic job of sharing her food and culture with diners from near and far. I was glad to support her and would highly recommend Harukor for those looking for an authentic and enjoyable Indigenous meal.
View on GoogleWonderful Izakaya with traditional Ainu cuisine. If you get the chance to visit, do it, it’s rare and delicious. The vibe is casual, the family running the restaurant friendly and the food caters to both meat eaters and seafood eaters. Service could be improved a bit, but the overall experience remains wonderful. Have your hotel make a phone reservation if possible, the place is tiny.
