I think the people who are writing less than stellar reviews are probably Americans who are used to ridiculously sweet cakes. The chocolate cake here is actually balanced very well with its bitterness being the main characteristic. If you love super dark high quality chocolate, you'll probably love this. I've been living in Japan for over 10 years now and I tend to find American cakes and treats waaay too sweet in a bad way these days. The chocolate cake from here was decadent. Very rich, moist and dense. The bitterness was strong and delicious but balanced with just enough sweetness. The aftertaste lingers in the back of your throat well after you've finished your slice and it's delightful. Probably the best chocolate cake I've ever had. I'm making this my birthday cake every year from now on. :) Sadly though, for those who have seen it from Worth It, the price has gone up by quite a bit! It was a little over 3,000 yen for the same size they got on that episode. I also got another cake to try. It wasn't nearly as good imo. I'd stick to their flagship chocolate cake, personally.
View on GoogleIf you're a true cocoa connaisseur, then this place is for you. The hot chocolate is for those who can appreciate the flavor of cocoa rather than milk and sugar. Also, the croissant and cakes are delicious. Cakes not unnecessarily sweet, croissant true to the tradition (authentic)! I'd.come back again. For those looking for creative flavors, not necessarily authentic, this place is not for you.
View on GoogleI'll be honest...When I finally came to Tokyo during Thanksgiving weekend, I definitely sought out Theobroma after seeing it in Buzzfeed's Worth It Japan episode! And it definitely did not disappoint! Walking into the shop, it felt really fancy and elegant. High ceilings and a long booth with a few tables on the right side for those who want to dine in. A long glass display full of amazing looking cakes, pastries, chocolate truffles and more. And on the right side of the glass display, I saw what I was looking for; the famous rectangular chocolate cake from the Worth It episode! A very rich and dense cake, it had an intense dark chocolate flavor and wasn't overly sweet, like similar cakes in the US are. And all for under ¥3000 yen! In addition to their selection of pastries and cakes, I also saw an amazing assortment of chocolate truffles and chocolate bars. If anyone is in the market for some delicious chocolate as gifts, Theobroma is definitely one of the spots to hit up! And since I was already there, I thought...why not stay for some dessert and refreshment? So yeah, I decided to get a pot of this herbal tea and a chestnut pastry. The lady who brought out my food, even gave me two complimentary pieces of chocolate to snack on, which I thought was a nice touch to the overall experience. All in all, this was a great experience. Theobroma did not disappoint. I will definitely be back in the near future to sample more of what they have to offer! :D
View on GoogleVisited this location after watching the Buzzfeed video. This place does not disappoint! The chocolate cake was smooth and rich in flavour. It was absolutely amazing and well worth the price! (Side note: the one that was featured on the show is a "whole cake" whereas mine is a piece.) I also had the cacao tea as recommended by their staff member which was enjoyable too. Overall, a great experience!
View on GoogleThis is slightly vintage and authentic cake shop. Their speciality is chocolate. Especially, the chocolate cake is very rich and melty taste. Canele is pretty large and satisfying chewy texture. Lemon tart brings full of lemony sweetness in your mouth.:))
