I recently stumbled upon an affordable izakaya in Shibuya called Mokkun. I found it on Google Maps and decided to try it out. The restaurant is quite small and we were turned away once because we didn't have a reservation, but we made sure to reserve a table when we came back. The food quality was decent and the prices were really reasonable. I especially enjoyed their chicken karaage.
View on GoogleDefinitely a place for locals. No English sign or menu. Main cuisine is smoked meat. Very affordable for a restaurant in Shibuya area. Located in an alley and up the stairs. Food is delicious and place is cosy. Downside though is that you may end up next to a table of smokers which can spoil your dinner completely if you don’t smoke.
View on GoogleOne of the best places we ate at on our trip to Japan. The food was delicious. You can try many parts of the chicken. While there isn't an English menu, you can certainly try to use Google Translate's Camera mode on the menu or on the wall menu. This izakaya is certainly tuned for the locals, but that makes this place a true Japanese experience. The staff is spirited and welcoming, and will try to bridge the language gap but I do recommend you come prepared before you come by learning the basics of how to order in Japanese. Note that smoking is allowed. We don't smoke but I think it added to the experience.
View on GoogleVery tasty chicken. Chicken kaarage was soo good. Nice atmosphere and excellent service. The place looks like for locals (all labels and menu in japanese) but staff do speak english. Maybe this creates special charm of the place. Also they work till early morning. Overall I was very satisfied
View on GoogleSmall cozy little yakitori restaurant. The price is very affordable, food tastes good! The only thing is I wish there were more yakitori choices
