Located here in Setagaya Ward, on "Teramachi-dori," a very unusual street lined with temples, "Joei-ji" is said to belong to the "Jodo Shinshu Honganji-ha" sect. I was really curious, so I visited

It's my family's temple, so I often come to visit the family grave. The grave of the Japanese-style painter Togyu Okumura is here.

Torigoesan Joei-ji. A temple of the Jodo Shinshu Honganji-ha sect. The principal image is Amida Nyorai. One of the temples of Karasuyama Teramachi. Joei-ji was damaged in the Great Kanto Earthquake, but the principal image was not.

The grave where my former teacher and their spouse rest is here, and I come to pay my respects. The temple grounds are beautiful with a dignified air, and it feels refreshing whenever I visit. There's a statue of Shinran Shonin, and before heading home I ask him to watch over us. Including this temple, the temple street in front is, true to its name, lined with temples, and during Ohigan and Obon the single narrow road gets terribly congested. I visit at different times or on different days. Recently it was hard to go out because of the COVID pandemic, so when I visited for the first time in a while, it looked like the walls and restrooms had been renewed.

It used to be in the Tsukiji Honganji temple town, but it burned down and moved to its current location The sect is Jodo Shinshu, and since it's a temple with many parishioner families, there are also many graves The temple grounds are always kept clean, so when you visit a grave there's no need to clean it and you can pay your respects right away
