Time warp to a cool old house from 1937 with everything intact including old appliances, and a nice garden. It’s free so worth a quick walk thru if you’re in the area.
View on GoogleHistorical residence in Setagaya, worth a quick visit
View on GoogleA quite Japanese house with a beautiful garden. Right next to Seikado Bunko, hence it is worth visiting both the places.
View on GoogleVisited 2026.4.2. The residence of a former person of power has been preserved and opened up so that anyone can tour it freely. Near the entrance there's a spacious bicycle parking area, and once you pass through the gate, there's the site of an old well on the right and a gazebo up on the left; heading toward the residence, there's the entrance to a walking path on the right and a drink vending machine on the left. It was around 12:30 on a weekday, but even having come this far, the atmosphere was so peaceful it felt like no one was watching. When I slid open the door of the residence and went inside, there was a sign asking you to take off your shoes before stepping up. It seemed like there were caretakers inside, but they apparently don't come out unless you specifically ask, so you can look around at your ease. I stepped up thinking I'd just take a quick look, but once I started making my way around the rooms on the tatami, it was so big it felt like there was no end no matter how far I went! At the very back there's a reception room; the furniture is old so you can't sit on it, but lots of picture books that looked modern were lined up on the bookshelves. There was even a diaper-changing space for babies, which felt kind of strange. Other than a community cat sleeping comfortably on top of an air conditioner outdoor unit in the back garden, and running into one of the caretakers on my way out, I got to fully enjoy a quiet time. It's free.
View on GoogleIt was a Sunday, but we were the only visitors, and admission was free. The building is well preserved, and the explanation the staff member gave us was interesting. There's no dedicated parking lot, so we used Times Tamagawa Hospital Dedicated Parking Lot No. 2.
