The tantanmen here is the best I tried so far here in Japan. Highly recommended!

Shoyu is a little weak but all of their spicy and shio options are excellent!

Two of us visited a little after 12 on Saturday. Fortunately, there was no wait, and we were shown straight to a table. Please note that this restaurant accepts cash only. 【What we ordered】 赤ずきん (extremely spicy tantanmen): 1,350円 Large portion: 100円 Ajitama: 150円 【Thoughts on the meal】 The 「赤ずきん」 arrived as a generously sized bowl with spicy-looking broth, plenty of green onions, minced meat, bean sprouts, and the ajitama topping perched on top. As for the heat level, I think anyone who can comfortably eat Hokkyoku Ramen at 「蒙古タンメン中本」 should have no trouble with this. I did feel that the heat somewhat obscured the sesame flavor and richness of the underlying tantanmen, but it was very well executed as an 「extremely spicy ramen」. Since I ordered a large portion, it also left me thoroughly full. There is also a 「free topping corner」 beside the ticket machine inside. This time I added some 「numbing sansho pepper」 partway through, and its lively tingling sensation joined the sharp chili heat, transforming it into 「numbing spicy ramen」. Being able to customize it to your liking is another appealing feature. 【Overall】 This was a very satisfying bowl for when you really want to indulge in some heat. Considering the portion, the fun of changing the flavor, and the overall quality, it's a restaurant that feels worthwhile. However, to appreciate the broth's own umami more deeply, next time I'd like to try something with a slightly lower heat level.

After serving as a career education guest speaker at an elementary school near Nishimagome, I headed to 麺処 鳴声. At this accomplished shop, the runner-up at the 2010 「Tokyo Ramen Show」, I had the limited-time chilled tantanmen. 1200円. It was as polished as expected, but if you want to fully savor the umami of tantanmen, there may have been no need to deliberately choose the chilled version. That said, its skill undoubtedly puts it a cut above nearby ramen shops, and the high quality of the tantanmen makes perfect sense. Several seasonings are available for changing the flavor too, good👍 The combination of fried garlic, raw garlic, and vinegar is fantastic. Next time, I think I'll go back to basics and have the soupless tantanmen. Visited 2026.7 🐯
