Got takeout from a long-established tempura shop. The people at the shop were lovely too. It was delicious even cold. Tempura with a home-cooked taste. Freshly fried tempura is the best! But this might sound strange: I also like pouring soy sauce over softened tempura and having it with piping-hot rice. I like that feeling of my mother frying tempura at home and serving the leftovers the next morning. Is that weird? Next time, I'll try freshly fried tempura in the restaurant.
View on GoogleI got off at Omori Station for the first time for work, and this place caught my eye while I was looking for lunch, so I went in. It's only a 4-minute walk from the station, so very close! There used to be good fishing grounds off the Omori coast, which is why there are so many tempura shops around Omori—tempura shops everywhere🤤 The exterior has a Showa-era feel, and inside has that retro Showa atmosphere too✨ The lunch menu had tendon, tempura sets, and sashimi sets, with regular, medium, and premium options for both the tendon and tempura sets! This time I ordered the medium tempura set (1,100円 including tax). The batter was nicely fried and piping hot! With shrimp, shiba shrimp, Japanese whiting, conger eel, and plenty of vegetables like eggplant and carrots, this price is very reasonable👏 Add grated daikon to the dipping sauce, and freshly fried tempura is just the best! It's great being able to try so many kinds of tempura😆 They're closed on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays, so keep that in mind when visiting‼️
View on GoogleI think the prices are fair. It's quite small, with 2 tables seating 4 and 1 table seating 2. The elderly lady who seemed to be the proprietress was very refined and served us politely. I visited for lunch and asked whether they had alcohol. She said they could serve beer at lunchtime (it's not on the lunch menu), so I ordered one. I'm not sure why, but everyone in the restaurant was served butterbur shoot tempura. It was delicious. Then someone who seemed to be a regular came in, casually ordered hot sake, and had the order accepted. I was perfectly happy with beer, so it wasn't really bothering me, but the proprietress repeatedly apologized for having refused sake earlier. I understand making exceptions for regulars, and this was the first time anyone had apologized to me for that, so I do think she was sincere. But if you're going to apologize afterward, wouldn't refusing the regular too be better for everyone? The main dish, the premium tempura set, had lotus root, eggplant, asparagus, about 2 pieces of fish that seemed like Japanese whiting? and 3 shrimp items with different cuts and sizes. Everything was delicious, but I left feeling a little unsettled.
View on GoogleAs the Showa era keeps disappearing, this is a shop I want to see preserved. I happened to walk past and had an early dinner. Both the portions and prices are wonderful! I like my rice on the soft side, so that was perfect too. The elderly lady is very courteous, and the man quickly noticed I had no tempura dipping sauce and brought some over. It feels really nice. I'll stop by again when I'm in Omori!
View on GoogleA return visit. Ordered the premium tempura set. Yes, it's delicious. Glad I did. The tempura set is the thing to get here. The rice is still soft, but the tempura itself has a light, crisp batter. The shrimp are springy. The whiting is tender! The dipping sauce is mild, so enjoy the flavors of the ingredients. The portion is surprisingly substantial too. Visited for lunch. Ordered the regular tendon. The tempura is more moist and soft than crisp. The sauce is thin? It barely has any flavor. The rice is too soft. Is this just a matter of preference? It wasn't for me. Soft rice seems to be the default here, so apparently the tempura set is the right choice rather than tendon. At 700円 with shiba shrimp, whiting, vegetables, and more, it's very cheap, but hmm, next time I'll try the tempura set.
