It's right beside the Nagasaki Tunnel and easy to pass by without noticing, but if you have time, stop for a moment. From the rock face, tens of millions of years old, you can get a glimpse of how the Ogasawara Islands were formed.
View on GoogleThis is an outcrop of bedrock that serves as important evidence for understanding how Chichijima was formed. The land here formed 20–60 million years ago when a volcano erupted on the seabed and the outflowing magma was rapidly cooled by seawater, forming a black, glassy layer. The idea that it was uplifted out of the sea and pushed up to heights of over 100 m on Chichijima is so romantic. Besides here, you can also see it at Buta Beach or on tours.
