A mountain climb you can enjoy on a gentle trail The highest point of the cape between Ashitsuki Onsen and Jinata Onsen You can get on the trail from near either the Ashitsuki or Jinata entrance Once you pass through the gentle low-shrub woods, a pretty windy panorama opens up. Direction-wise, Kozushima towers right in front of you It's a spot that's not even on the map and hardly anyone comes, but that's why the hardcore islanders frequent it lol
View on GoogleIt's a fairly stunning view. I climbed up from Ashitsuki Onsen via a wild side path, but there were tons of sticky burrs that stuck all over my clothes. The slope itself is only steep enough that an elementary schooler could climb it, so I guess it's good exercise. The Kamibiki Observatory on the other side might be better. The route from the guesthouse in the center → Ashitsuki Onsen → observation deck takes about 45 minutes, walking while taking photos.
View on GoogleAn observation deck along the way to Jinata Onsen. You can see Niijima, Kozushima, and Miyakejima in the distance. A scenic spot with a nice view.
View on GoogleThe entrance to the observation deck is about 60m before the path down to Jinata Onsen. After going about 30m along a narrow path, there's a trail on the left going down to Ashitsuki Onsen, and on foot you can get through to Ashitsuki Onsen or Matsugashita Miyabiyu. For the observation deck, go straight and climb about 75 steps up a steep mountain path. There's a platform and wooden railings that make it look like an observation deck, but the trees are overgrown so the view isn't very open. It's under 10 minutes, but I didn't get a view worth the effort of climbing up. It was partly because it was unfortunately overcast, but in good weather, Shikinejima Port would probably spread out below, with the beautiful scenery of Niijima and Hayashima straight ahead…. At Ashitsuki Onsen I happened to run into the village's tourism officer, and when I mentioned the view here, they said they'd tidy it up soon.
View on GoogleThe rocky hill separating Ashitsuki Onsen and Jinata Onsen on Shikinejima, Niijima Village, Tokyo, is Ashichiyama (66.8m). The observation deck built at its summit is the Ashichiyama Observatory. The place name takes one character each — 足 from Ashitsuki and 地 from Jinata — and there's also a path leading south up to the observation deck from partway along the walkway connecting Ashitsuki Onsen and Jinata Onsen.
