As a sailor from Yokosuka this was the most welcoming and least apt to take advantage of the prices or time constraints of a lack of customers due to COVID. Straightforward and deliberately hospitable staff. I will come back here during any time off. Fantastic sushi! And I highly recommend it!!

Bento Top premium, one serving, no wasabi, 4500円 →I told them over the phone that I would come to pick it up in about 15 minutes. When I arrived, even though there were no customers, it still wasn’t ready, so I waited at a table. Suddenly I had a bad feeling and checked, “It’s without wasabi, right?” Sure enough, he was making it “with wasabi.” As I worried, “I already told him it’s a gift for someone and that I’m short on time, but now it has to be remade... Will I make it in time?” the owner gave me some precious words that made me doubt my own ears. “It would be a waste of ingredients, so could they eat it while removing the wasabi?” Was that an SDGs-inspired statement? Those precious words went far beyond anything I could have imagined, in a completely unexpected direction, so I couldn’t react immediately. “...If I were eating it myself, that would be fine, but, as I said earlier, it’s for someone else (who doesn’t like wasabi), so could you please hurry and remake it without wasabi?” Perhaps because I hadn’t quite grasped the situation, I somehow asked apologetically, and the owner flew into a rage. Even though I hadn’t blamed or criticized him at all for making it wrong, he started rambling on with complaints or whatever they were, criticizing me deliberately loudly enough for me to hear. I was irritated, but I had promised to bring sushi, so I put up with it. (It was late at night, and I didn’t have time to look for or go to another restaurant.) Since the sushi was going to be remade, and I had parked my car on the street because I originally planned to pick it up and head straight back, I explained that and said, “I’m going to check that my car’s okay. I’ll be right back in 2.3 minutes.” As I tried to leave, the owner gave me another set of precious words. “If you’re leaving the restaurant, leave the money.” ......Whoa, hold on. He hadn’t even started the new sushi yet, I hadn’t eaten anything inside, and I hadn’t even been offered tea or water. From my perspective, the only service I’d received was being inconvenienced and made to listen to incomprehensible complaints... With no choice, I put 10000円 on the counter, checked my car, and came straight back. Words blaming me, insulting me, and attacking my character came pouring rhythmically out of the owner’s mouth in a torrent. Sitting at the counter watching, I noticed that whenever his mouth moved, his hands stopped completely. Apparently he can’t move his mouth and hands at the same time. Yet all he did was move his mouth, so I watched for a while thinking, “I wish he’d move his hands before his mouth. His hands are almost completely stopped, so it doesn’t look like he’s making any progress at all.” Once I confirmed that the deadline for handing it over had completely passed, I started fighting back. The owner will probably post a rebuttal after this, so please look forward to reading about my counterattack there. (I’m sure he’ll exaggerate and write things both real and invented...) And what he made is what you see in the photo. This work took about 30 minutes to produce. (I took this photo later on the restaurant counter with the owner’s permission and, as I’ll explain later, the police’s permission. I also received the owner’s permission to upload this photo to SNS and elsewhere online, and the police beside him heard him give that permission.) As I stood dumbfounded after being handed something with that kind of contents and appearance, he quickly grabbed the 10000円 I had put on the counter and went into the back. I followed him, and there was the cash register. I felt disappointed, thinking, “He serves something like this and still takes money... Does he have no pride or shame as a human being, a businessman, or a sushi restaurant owner?” But I changed my mindset and thought, “It’s a waste, but maybe I should give up and consider it money thrown down the drain...” I waited for my change, but there was absolutely no sign of him ringing it up or giving me any. Even paying 4500円 felt ridiculous, but it wasn’t an amount that particularly hurt me, so after making a huge concession, I could still let that slide. But I thought, “What the hell does he mean by not even giving me my change?!” When I told him that, I received another set of precious words. “The sushi I made with wasabi has to be thrown away, but those wasted ingredients cost money too.” Is he some kind of genius, being able to come up with and actually say things like this to customers so effortlessly? Of course I refused that part, saying, “You’re the one who made the mistake and put wasabi in it, so that’s not my problem...” Apparently there was still another fuse to his anger. He suddenly moved his body toward me and said, “Yes! I’m the one at fault! So why don’t you hit me until you’re satisfied! Hurry up and hit me as much as you like!” It was so utterly incomprehensible that I honestly couldn’t keep up. (Was he planning to call the police for assault if I hit him? Besides, I’m not falling for such cheap provocation.) It took time, but I somehow got my 5500円 change back. When I said I wanted a receipt, he said things so incomprehensible that my brain couldn’t understand them, so I can’t write down what he said. The only conclusion I understood was that he didn’t want to give me a receipt. When I kept insisting, I couldn’t understand what he disliked about issuing a receipt, but he finally wrote one and handed it over while venting his frustration... with no date. When I said, “Without a date, the tax office will flag it and won’t accept it, so giving me this just causes trouble,” I received another set of precious words. “Just write whatever date you want yourself!” Um... that’s illegal. Earlier he bragged about running a sushi restaurant for 35 years (?), but does he always leave the date blank? For regulars, does he write whatever date suits them? It wasn’t a POS system, so his bookkeeping seems suspicious too. To anyone at the tax office, if you have some time, why not take a quick look into this restaurant? (By the way, I didn’t want him to know my name, so I didn’t ask for a recipient’s name on the receipt. That’s why I also decided not to claim it as a business expense.) I got to hear his ridiculous sayings, and it was so absurd that it was half entertaining, but eventually I got bored. It was too late to give the sushi to the intended person, and even if I had made it in time, it looked like that, so I would have been too embarrassed to give it. On the other hand, sushi with such a top-class appearance wouldn’t suit my palate (I interpreted the bento box being about 1/4 empty as meaning he had already used too many top-class toppings, and filling it any further would surely exceed the ingredient budget. Each sushi looks misshapen only from an ordinary person’s perspective; to a knowledgeable eye, each must have an individual, artistic shape). So when I tried to leave empty-handed, the owner made his last desperate attempt (?) and said, “Wait, I’m calling the police.” I no longer cared and thought it was a waste of time and a hassle, but I did say, “I’ve paid. I haven’t even touched you. There are no other customers and nobody has tried to enter, so I haven’t interfered with your business. I haven’t damaged anything in the restaurant or kicked any chairs or tables. Have I caused trouble for the restaurant or done anything? On the contrary, after you made something different from my order, I didn’t particularly criticize you even for the additional delay caused by remaking it. All I did was ask, ‘It’s for someone else, so please remake it as quickly as possible,’ yet without a proper apology, you’re the one who picked a fight. Given these circumstances, the police don’t intervene in civil matters, so calling them won’t resolve anything (?) (...No, perhaps he was plotting something to frame me?), and it’ll just be a wasted trip for them, so I think you shouldn’t.” I warned him, but apparently he wouldn’t be satisfied without calling the police, and he called 110. Now I had to wait even longer for the police to arrive. Thinking, “What a complete waste of time late at night,” I gave him some advice while we waited. “Because you call the police over every trivial thing like this, they have to allocate personnel for it. They’re made to do pointless things like this, which increases expenses and raises taxes. Do you understand? They have a budget too, so eventually they become understaffed and their actual duties get neglected. The police, fire department, and ambulance services aren’t handymen. Do you understand that?!” ...He probably doesn’t have that kind of thinking in him. After a while, 2 police officers arrived, listened to both sides (as a formality), and that was it. Perhaps the owner wasn’t satisfied with their response, or perhaps things hadn’t gone the way he imagined, but he snapped at all of us, including the police, “I’m closing, get out now!” I think that’s rude when he was the one who called and had them come. The officers then prompted me to leave with them, and I talked with them outside for a while. They were beyond exasperated and felt very sorry for me. They laughed and said things like, “We were surprised too that that bento cost 4500円.” In the end they even said, “Sorry we can’t do anything for you (probably because it’s a civil matter). You’ll have to swallow the 4500円 loss, but getting it back would be difficult, so please forget about today as soon as you can.” I said, “I didn’t think there was anything the police could do either, so thank you for your concern. I’m sorry you had to come out and be inconvenienced over something like this,” and we parted. I thought the owner was selfish and self-centered, only able to make excuses to protect himself over his mistakes and actions, and trying to blame others regardless of whether they were customers. By the way, I got the impression that his preferred way of apologizing might be to lash out while looking down on customers from far above their heads?
