T-bone steaks, meaty sharing platters & whiskey at an upscale restaurant styled like a private club.

│「A “superb steakhouse” that impresses gourmets」 ウルフギャング・ステーキハウス was founded in Manhattan in 2004 by ウルフギャング・ズウィナー, who struck out on his own after working for over 40 years at a prestigious NY steakhouse. Its carefully crafted, delicious steaks quickly made it a thriving restaurant. 「Prime Grade」 beef, certified as the highest quality under the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) grading system, is aged for an extended period in a dedicated aging room. As beef ages, its natural enzymes tenderize the meat while proteins break down, increasing the amino acids responsible for umami. The meat, made more tender and flavorful through this prolonged dry-aging process, is cut into thick slices…

I booked this restaurant for my boyfriend’s birthday dinner, so we were expecting a special and memorable experience. However, we were very disappointed. Although the staff seemed to know that we were there to celebrate his birthday, there was no birthday celebration or special arrangement at all. The only gesture we received was a cup of coffee, which felt quite inadequate, especially since the staff had already asked us earlier whether we wanted more coffee or tea and we had declined. The food itself was delicious, and the atmosphere was lovely. It is a shame that the chef’s excellent food was let down by the service. Overall, because this was meant to be a special birthday dinner, we left feeling disappointed.

I must have expected a lot from this place. They gave us homemade bread with a thin sliver of butter. After we were done with it, they never offered more. The drink menu came. We chose mai tai and spicy Moscow mule. The Wolfgang mai tai was packed with vodka, it was tasting pure spirit on ice, where is the fruity tropical taste? The spicy moscow mule was a little better. Started with the Wolfgang salad, it was packed with tomatoes and onions. Never have i seen onions to be chopped so big, the size of thumbnail. Then came the soup. It was such a boring minestrone style soup ,and tasted like nothing. 2 dishes later, i was feeling squeamish and my hope to save the place was the burger. The burger! Why on earth would you not season your meat?! It was tasteless. Will never go back again. You need to up your game to level with the ambience and excellent service. Harajuku wolfgang was so much better. No wonder the place was practically empty.

Made a reservation at this outlet to celebrate my partner’s birthday, so we came in with fairly high expectations given the reputation of the Wolfgang group and our previous positive experiences at their outlets in other countries. Unfortunately, the experience here fell far below expectations. From the moment we arrived, the first impression already felt inconsistent with what we’ve come to expect from the Wolfgang group. The front-of-house staff did not appear to have a clear or consistent uniform or dress standard, which gave the arrival experience a less polished feel compared to other Wolfgang outlets we’ve visited internationally. For a brand positioned at this level, details like front desk presentation do contribute significantly to guests’ confidence and first impressions. We were then attended to by a waiter named Take, who appeared to have difficulty communicating in English. While language barriers can happen, it became an issue when even basic questions - such as asking about the soup of the day - could not be answered immediately, and he had to go back to check. We had booked the lunch course, but when the starter was served, there was no explanation or introduction of the dishes. Throughout the meal, table clearing was also slow, and we had to prompt staff multiple times to clear finished plates. We also ordered cocktails, but the drinks sat prepared at the bar for quite some time without being served. My partner’s Negroni was eventually brought over with regular ice cubes and was noticeably diluted, likely from sitting out too long. Trying to explain the issue was also unnecessarily difficult - we had to rely on Google Translate to communicate that the drink had been diluted and that the ice presentation was inconsistent with what is typically expected for a Negroni. The phone was then passed between multiple staff members before seemingly reaching the manager. A replacement was eventually provided after that. The highlight of the experience was Justice, who served our main course. He was professional, spoke English well, and was able to properly explain the dishes and engage with us. He was the only staff member who made the experience feel aligned with the standards expected of this brand. Overall, what should have been a relaxing birthday celebration turned into a frustrating experience due to what felt like insufficient staff training and inconsistent service standards. To make matters worse, I had also shared my disappointment via Instagram Stories and tagged the restaurant, only for my story to be reposted by them without properly reviewing the content first. It was later taken down, but there was no acknowledgement or private follow-up regarding the issue. This level of oversight and lack of service recovery is disappointing for such an established brand. Unfortunately, based on this experience, we would not return.

JAN 2025 Visited here on new years day and had the lunch course which included complimentary bread, wolfgang's salad, soup of the day, and the signature USDA prime dry aged t-bone steak served with mashed potatoes and creamed spinach. The wolfgang's salad had diced tomato, onion, green beans, paprika, shrimp and bacon; tossed in a light dressing. Salad was fresh and there was a good amount of shrimp and bacon. The soup of the day was a clear chicken soup which was hearty with a little sweetness from the onion and carrots. For the main, the t-bone steak came out straight from the oven and the staff basted the steak with butter while it was still sizzling and served it on a plate with the sides. The steak was cooked perfectly medium rare, tender with a crispy crust exterior. It was flavorsome and very tasty on it's own; savory and buttery which paired well with the creamy and smooth mashed potatoes and creamed spinach. They also have their signature sauce which taste like a mix of ketchup and worcestershire sauce; the sweet tartness helps offset the richness of the steak. Overall a tasty meal and the service was good. Recommend getting the lunch course which is slightly cheaper than dinner if you mainly want to try the dry aged t-bone steak.

Wolfgang’s always provides a fancy, delicious dining experience. The steaks are cooked to perfection and include a flavorful peppercorn sauce. However, Wolfgang’s is more than just a steak house… it also offers a wide array of appetizers and scrumptious side dishes like creamed corn, lobster macaroni and cheese, and creamed spinach. Appetizers include jumbo shrimp cocktail, lobster bisque, crab cakes… so much to choose! The soup, salads and sides have an option to request the half portions, but I don’t recall seeing it on the menu, but our server told us about this option. It’s so ideal because it allows you to order a few to try! (I typically skip the filet and order the sides, but then have a bite of my husband’s steak). There are a few branches of Wolfgang’s in Tokyo. All offer similar menu and I’ve always had impeccable service. The main difference I’ve found is in the wine menu pricing. The Roppongi branch did not offer bottles below 10000¥, but the Marunouchi one has a few more affordable options.
