Sculptures & painting by 20th century abstract artist Taro Okamoto in his former house & studio.
This Taro Okamoto Memorial Museum was Taro Okamoto's studio and residence until he died in 1996 at age 84. It is the space where he lived for more than 40 years from 1954. The place where he painted, dictated manuscripts, wrestled with sculptures, met people, and conceived and created all of his works, including huge monuments and murals such as the Tower of the Sun for the World Expo. His energy still fills it to this day. What's more, before the war this was Aoyama Takagi-cho 3-banchi. This is a small museum that's housed within the late artist's residence. The artworks on display are amazing but limited. Perhaps the curator rotates them periodically. Near the entrance is a gift shop and also a small cafe which looks out to his garden where some sculptures are on display. There's a ticket price of ¥900 for adults which isn't expensive but also not that cheap for such a small museum. It's a nice place to hang out for a quiet afternoon.
View on GoogleI’ve always loved the mural by Taro Okamoto in Shibuya station so to actually get to his residence and studio was amazing. You can still feel his presence there, the art works are incredible and the sculpture garden is a hidden gem. Make sure to have pancakes at A Piece of Cake while you’re there. I’ll be back!
View on GoogleMy friends and I enjoyed the Taro Museum and found the list of accomplishments interesting. The price is reasonable for the area, just a block away from the LV store. Overall, it was a great experience and something different from the other museum we visited in Tokyo. I do wish they displayed more of his work. You can see the amount of work hidden within his studio.
View on GoogleThe Taro Okamoto Memorial Museum is a fantastic attraction in Tokyo. I went in not knowing anything about Taro Okamoto, but left with a fond appreciation of his art and admiration for how his space has been used. You get to see his prolific body of work, and enjoy some surprises in the garden! You learn a lot and for a very reasonable price! I'm glad I went - it was very memorable and joyous!
View on GoogleInteresting art but the museum is very small and doesn’t offer much background in English
