Perfect place for people who are super hungry and don’t want to choose menu! You only have 2 choices, regular or big size of rice ;D and with or without egg. I ordered big size, but the owner grab a regular size and asked me if this is enough for you LMAO. I was like yeah, i’ll get this one with an egg then. That was just 650+50 yen with an unlimited toppings. It is super cheap!!(woohoo!)

Long known as a counter curry shop that hits the three notes of "fast, cheap, and delicious," "Kare no Mise Sumatra." Unfortunately, the shop will close at the end of 2025. I visited during the final week of operation of this legendary curry specialty shop in Tokyo, which has been in business for 82 years since its founding in 1943. I ordered my usual staple, "Curry only large portion + cabbage salad" (1100 yen + 60 yen including tax). This time I also added a "raw egg" (60 yen). I poured the curry sauce, which is full of pork & potatoes, added the cabbage salad, and placed the "raw egg yolk" in the center. To taste the "last Sumatra Curry" straight, I took a bite or two of just the curry. The umami of the pork fat melted into the curry sauce and the unique depth of spiciness from 30 different spices spread throughout my mouth. The phrase "simple is best" fits this curry perfectly. "A Japanese curry from the Showa era that makes you feel relieved when you eat it." I continued eating while mixing the curry with the cabbage salad. My spoon didn't stop, and in between, I added 4 types of complimentary pickles (red ginger, fukujinzuke, red shiso, and tsubozuke) before returning to the curry. I was able to feel the taste of "Sumatra Curry" firmly on my tongue and enjoyed the meal with deep emotion. Thank you for everything over the years.

● Curry Exploration Log Vol. 195 2025/5/XX (Dinner) A long-established curry specialty shop founded in 1943 that I had been curious about for a while. They are open all day, so I visited during the idle time just after 4 PM. There are only U-shaped counter seats, and the menu is only displayed inside the shop. The menu is basically a choice between curry or large curry. ■ Sumatra Curry (regular portion) @740 yen (tax included) *Cash payment only When I was looking for the menu without saying anything, the owner showed me the amount of rice for a regular portion, so I ordered it as is. About 30 seconds after entering, the curry was served. The curry has a color similar to Japanese curry, but it has a unique flavor that is difficult to describe. There were no solid ingredients visible, and the curry sauce felt like all the ingredients had melted into it. It's not very spicy, but there is a lingering spiciness after eating. The rice was cooked on the firmer side, which I liked. On the table, there are 4 types of curry accompaniments available, which are all-you-can-eat. I enjoyed it by adding accents with the saltiness of the red shiso and the sweetness of the fukujinzuke. The owner's service was kind and warm. My stay was about 5 minutes, but I was satisfied with the dining experience. Since the curry is served quickly, I think it's a very helpful shop for busy business people. Thank you for the meal.

September 19, 2024 (Thursday) 12:30 PM "Tabelog - Talked about shop" I went in after seeing the sign in front of the store. Despite being a talked-about shop, it was empty. When I ordered the Sumatra Curry (regular portion) for 740 yen, it came out in about 10 seconds. Cheap and fast is good, but it was beyond terrible. I am a Kanda Curry Grand Prix Meister and a curry lover, but maybe because it's Shimbashi, they can do business with this kind of curry. If we're talking about curry without thickness, there's the Kashmir Curry from "Delhi" in Ueno, but there's no comparison. After eating Kashmir Curry, a refreshing spice aroma remains in the mouth, but Sumatra Curry left a disgusting cheap oil taste for several hours. It tastes like curry made by a mother in the countryside in the early Showa era. Not recommended.
