I used to live in the area and didn't realise this museum was here. It is a charming renovated building that used to be the National institute of public health. They preserved a few rooms which is free to access. There is also a library here that is open to use. The museum has permanent and temporary exhibits and cost 300-500yen to enter.
View on GoogleA museum established in a Georgian style building. The interior of the building is kept true to its old, retro design and layouts. The building used to be a medical/health institute dedicated to improving healthcare in Tokyo. After its decommissioning, the building fell into disrepair and was later petitioned to be transformed into a museum and community space. The museum has a few free exhibits and a permanent pay per entry exhibit. The permanent exhibit focuses on designated historical buildings and the history of civilization around Tokyo especially the bay of Tokyo, and how Tokyo developed into what it is today. The museum surprisingly put in quite a bit of efforts to provide English translation for most of the exhibits so that foreigners can better appreciate exhibitions. This place is definitely worth the visit just to admire the architecture of the buildings if not for the museum itself. There is a nice, chic cafe on the 1st floor of the museum. And a cancer palliative centre on the 5th and 6th floor that you can freely visit and have a look around.
View on GoogleI paid 300¥ to view the permanent exhibits, and it was worth it. There were plentiful explanations and interactive screens in English. I love reading books on Japanese architecture in the library. I visited on 12 June 2025.
