The whale gallery is a single room with two large skeletons. You'll finish it in less than 5-10 minutes. There is a marine museum next door. The museum is quiet, but interesting - full of skeletons/taxidermied crabs, shells, birds, whales and seals. Expect to spend just under an hour in total. There is no cost.
View on GoogleA whale museum located inside Tokyo University of Marine Science and Technology. It's called a museum, but there are only 2 whale skeletons—still, they're incredibly impressive. It feels like looking at dinosaur bones, and imagining such a huge animal right up close sends chills down your spine. It's free, so if you're in the area, please drop by.
View on GoogleThere were skeleton specimens of 3 species, including the right whale. The right whale is really huge, and I was moved thinking, wow, something like this lives in the ocean~. There seems to be no air conditioning, and industrial fans were running, but it was hot. I think it's fine as long as you don't stay too long.
View on GoogleJust under a 10-minute walk from the Konan Exit of Shinagawa Station! It's located on the campus of the Marine University. If you go straight past the guard room, on your left there's a building with big windows where you can see whale skeletons. There were free booklets on the desk next to the entrance. But since there's no staff stationed there, with bad timing you might not get one. When I went, a parent and child were there ahead of me, I took one, the next person who came took one, and then they ran out. You can see them up close, so it was super impressive!
