In China, pigs are considered symbols of wealth and happiness. Every dish at 「万豚記(ワンツーチィ)」, named to signify auspicious pigs multiplying in great numbers, comes in generous portions. The top recommendation is 「豚バラ青菜炒飯」, a generously loaded pork belly and leafy greens fried rice with the sweetness and savory richness of oyster sauce coating the rice.

I stopped by for lunch, and I think the big portions might be because there’s a university nearby. I had the tantanmen — a spicy noodle dish originally from Chinese Sichuan cuisine, usually made with a sesame or peanut-based broth, minced meat, and chili oil. I’m pretty picky when it comes to tantanmen, but this one was solid. The broth was nicely creamy with that rich sesame flavour, and the spice level was about what you'd expect — not over the top, but definitely present. If you can’t handle spicy food, I wouldn’t recommend it, but for me, it hit the spot.

This Chinese restaurant is along 大学通り, marked by a large pig sign. It is known for its extensive menu and generous portions, but this time I ordered the ramen. The bowl arrived piled almost to overflowing with large slices of chashu, big pieces of kakuni, and toppings such as a seasoned egg, making quite a visual impact. However, once I started eating, the layer of fat covering the soup was much thicker than expected, making the whole dish quite oily. The meat toppings themselves were also very heavy, so by the time I finished, my stomach felt thoroughly weighed down. It might be good for people who like hearty dishes or lots of fat, but it may not suit everyone. The restaurant itself has an authentic, casual atmosphere, and other dishes such as fried rice interest me too, so next time I think I will order something else.

🇯🇵 - 東京 - 国立 「A neighborhood Chinese restaurant with generous portions」 【万記豚 国立店】 A neighborhood Chinese restaurant just outside the north exit of 谷保駅 on the 南武線. There are many menu options, including set meals, fried rice, and gyoza, and portions are generally generous. Fried and grilled pig's feet. Crisp and fragrant outside, with a soft, melting texture rich in collagen. ■手打餃子(焼・6個)@660円 👍 Chewy gyoza filled with glass noodles. The wrappers are fairly thick and satisfying, with a texture a little different from ordinary gyoza. Large gyoza. The flavor is simple, like ordinary gyoza. Fried rice with shrimp, squid, and baby scallops. Even the regular serving is substantial. ■魯肉飯@880円 👍 Lu rou fan packed into a full bowl. Rich sweet-savory seasoning with the aroma of star anise. There is more than it looks like, making it satisfying. Egg fried rice with pork. The garlic is mild, and the dish does not feel as steak-like as its name suggests. ■油淋鶏定食@1188円 👍 Comes with egg soup. Includes 2 large pieces of chicken thigh, with a crunchy coating that pairs well with the sweet-savory scallion sauce. A very generous portion. A simple stir-fried leafy greens dish. Slightly watery, with ordinary seasoning. Crispy fried noodles with a thick sauce. The noodles are a little firm. Apparently the signature dish. Simple fried rice combining leafy greens and pork belly, with a gentle, old-fashioned flavor. Free large serving of rice. Twice-cooked pork with gyoza, soup, and salad. Rich seasoning that goes well with rice or beer. Free large serving of rice. Soft-cooked eggs, pork, and wood ear mushrooms with gentle Cantonese-style seasoning. Brothless tantanmen with a tingling, numbing heat. The spice is mild and easy to eat. Liver and garlic chive stir-fry with plenty of liver. Free large serving of rice at lunch. Small gyoza. The same type as those included in the lunch sets. ────────────────── Portions are generous overall, making this a good neighborhood Chinese restaurant when you want a substantial meal. The free large serving of rice at lunch is another welcome point. A convenient choice when you want to eat your fill around 谷保. Thank you for the meal.
