Yudofu of the sumo world Yudofu, said to have originated at 友綱部屋, is a regional dish born in Osaka around 400 years ago, predating chanko nabe. It was 友綱部屋 that spread its flavor throughout the sumo world. Today, it has also been passed down to the professional wrestling world. Our restaurant stands on the former site of 友綱部屋, where you can enjoy authentic yudofu and chanko nabe while experiencing its history and traditions. Reflecting the stable's deep ties with Kochi Prefecture, the specialty “土佐のカツオのたたき” is also popular. Our manager, a former sumo wrestler, shows off his cooking skills, and you might even hear some behind-the-scenes stories from the sumo world!?

The restaurant is sumo-themed and has a very nice atmosphere. The owner, a former sumo wrestler, is friendly and will chat with you throughout the meal. I recommend being able to speak and read at least intermediate Japanese. The owner was very patient as I tried to communicate with limited Japanese. The nabe was delicious and healthy, and you could flavor the broth to your liking. A very fun experience, and I would go again.

Cliffs - Amazing meal, delicious and healthy - great folks at this establishment My wife and I came here since it was close to our hotel and because I wanted to try Chanko nabe before leaving Japan. The first night, we arrived 30-40 mintues before they were about to close so we just ate quickly as we did not want to inconvenience them. However, we made reservations for the next night as our last meal before flying back home. Needless to say it did not disappoint. We had a delicious, filling, and nutritious meal with plenty of high balls to wash it down. This chanko nabe utilizes pork belly, chicken thighs, and an assortment of vegetables. The broth is light, but you get a sauce on the side to season your bowl. It had hints of umami and salt and from what I could tell it utilizes negi and miso. It was very delicious. In addition to the food we spent around 2 hrs talking to Mr. Kainowaka Naoya (ex sumo wrestler) and briefly to the chef as well. We discussed many things over the past 2 hours, but one of the topics we talked about was our training experiences, him with sumo, and mine with grappling. Needless to say this was one of the best and most memorable dining experiences we had in Japan. My wife and I hope to come back in the future after I learn nihongo so we will not have to communicate via phone with Mr. Kainowaka Naoya. P.S. Since coming back home I've been making Chanko Nabe with my version of yudofu sauce :) It was that good.
