While I was resting at Tomioka Hachimangu during the Oedo Fukagawa Sakura Matsuri on Saturday, March 21, 2026, the person running the dorayaki stall on the shrine grounds was away, so I could not buy any. Then I found dorayaki at the storefront of Ishii no Amaguri in the shopping street along the main road and bought some. I ended up not eating it, and today, Wednesday, March 25, I will have it as a snack. It is not homemade by Ishii no Amaguri but is dorayaki from Meiho Shokuhin in Aichi Prefecture. Still, I was glad I could buy it when I wanted some.
View on GoogleThe wind rises, and now it is autumn. When I visited Fukagawa Hachiman-sama to pray, a lovely, toasty aroma led me to Ishii no Amaguri. Around 17:00 on the Saturday of October's 3-day weekend. The red banners saying “New-harvest chestnuts” and “Extra sweet chestnuts!!” catch the eye. The new-harvest chestnut fair offers 30% extra sweet chestnuts until Monday, 11/4♡. So generous in times like these! This long-established sweet chestnut shop has been around for 70 years. The chestnut bags come in various sizes, starting at 700円. This time I bought the 1,000円 bag. It even comes with a chestnut shell opener, making them easy to peel. These Tianjin sweet chestnuts are subtly sweet and delicious, with a simple, rustic flavor. When autumn starts setting in, you just can't help craving them.
View on GoogleThe chestnuts I bought first thing in the morning, just after opening, were actually cold. I don't know whether they were leftovers from the day before, but they tasted old. I've bought them several times recently, but I hardly ever get freshly roasted chestnuts, which is far too disappointing. From what I can see, they are turning the roasting pot and scooping chestnuts out of it, but the taste is really heavy. They aren't bad, but I don't think, “So sweet, so delicious,
View on GoogleThe neighborhood chestnut shop!! They really are different from the pre-peeled ones you can buy at supermarkets and convenience stores. I love their roughness in a good way, and their fluffy texture and simple flavor. It can't be helped that when you buy chestnuts in their shells, there are often some bad ones mixed in, but I was surprised that almost all the chestnuts from here were delicious! The smallest size costs 700円, so I'm glad they're easy to buy whenever the mood strikes.
View on GoogleIshii no Amaguri Fukagawa is a charming, traditional sweet chestnut specialty shop on Eitai-dori, a short distance from Monzen-nakacho Station. It uses fine chestnuts that are extremely delicious. They clearly reflect the shop's greatest commitment. The secret to this deliciousness lies in the ingredients. The shop carefully selects top-quality sweet chestnuts from Qinglong County in Hebei Province, China, and is committed to roasting and serving them fresh at the shop every day. The sweet, toasty chestnut aroma drifting out to the storefront is proof of that day's fresh roasting. It is a takeaway-only shop with a nostalgic interior. The natural sweetness and fluffy texture of these carefully selected “fine chestnuts” make them perfect as a souvenir from a stroll around Monzen-nakacho or as a slightly indulgent snack.
