This is the engine used on the "Daigo Fukuryu Maru," which was exposed to radiation from an American hydrogen bomb test in 1954. After the ship was scrapped, the engine was fitted to another cargo ship, but that ship later sank in 1968 and the engine was left on the seabed. In 1996 the engine was raised from the sea and put on display here.

This is the engine of the Daigo Fukuryu Maru, displayed near the Daigo Fukuryu Maru Exhibition Hall. It's covered in pitch-black ash, a precious real artifact that directly conveys the horror of radiation exposure. It's surprising that after the hydrogen bomb test at Bikini Atoll exposed the Daigo Fukuryu Maru to radiation, the engine was used on another ship. I wonder if, for economic reasons, even things that had been exposed to radiation were used if they were still usable.. --- This engine was used on the Daigo Fukuryu Maru, which was exposed to radiation in the hydrogen bomb test at Bikini Atoll. It was later installed on another cargo ship, which sank. 28 years later it was raised from the seabed and brought to Yumenoshima. History of the Daigo Fukuryu Maru's engine: The Bikini Incident: On March 1, 1954, the United States conducted a hydrogen bomb test at Bikini Atoll, and the Daigo Fukuryu Maru was exposed to radiation. To another ship: In 1967 the Daigo Fukuryu Maru was scrapped, but the engine was bought by Jutaro Okuchi and installed on the cargo ship "Daisan Chiyokawa Maru." Sinking: The Daisan Chiyokawa Maru sank off the coast of Mie Prefecture in 1968, and the engine sank to the seabed with it. Recovery and display: In 1996 it was raised from the seabed, in 1998 it was brought to Yumenoshima, and it is now displayed in front of the Daigo Fukuryu Maru Exhibition Hall.

【The Engine of the Daigo Fukuryu Maru】 This engine was used on the "Daigo Fukuryu Maru," which was damaged by the hydrogen bomb test conducted by the United States on March 1, Showa 29 (1954), at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands in the Pacific Ocean. The "Daigo Fukuryu Maru" was scrapped in Showa 42 (1967), but the engine was bought by Jutaro Okuchi and installed on his cargo ship, the "Daisan Chiyokawa Maru." Later, in July Showa 43 (1968), that ship ran aground and sank off Kumano-nada in Mie Prefecture, and the engine sank into the sea. In December Heisei 8 (1996), after 28 years, the engine was raised from the sea. The Tokyo Metropolitan Government received the engine as a donation and put it on display here, in front of the Daigo Fukuryu Maru Exhibition Hall.

Visited 2026.2.10. The engine of the Daigo Fukuryu Maru is displayed outdoors. Reading the explanation made me think deeply.

After the incident, the ship was scrapped in Showa 42 and the engine was resold and used on a cargo ship, but the following year that ship ran aground in Kumano-nada. The engine lay on the seabed at a depth of 10 meters, but after 28 years it was raised and is now preserved at its current location.
