宝華Hōka
Long-running restaurant serving up bowls of housemade noodles with soy sauce broth & roast pork.
“油そば” is a noodle dish originating in Tokyo's Tama area. There are various theories about which restaurant created it, and none has been established, but one version with a distinguished heritage that consistently appears in gourmet magazines is “宝そば” at the Chinese restaurant 宝華 in Koganei.

If you get there earlier than 6 pm, you may or may not have to wait, later than that and you take your chances. There's a good reason for this - they have limited seating, with about 6 (7?) tables and a few counter seats. Fortunately, If there is a wait, they'll usually take your order before you enter, so when you are seated the drinks and food won't be far behind. As for the food - pretty darn good and affordable. For myself, I ordered the Big Chashu, which is just braised pork on a bed of sliced cabbage - very tender, and not over-seasoned with salt. I also had the gyoza - very good, and the seasoned soft boiled egg - also very good. My partners-in-crime both had the Abura Soba (oil soba noodles). They really enjoyed the noodles, which were flavorful and had a creamier texture than traditional ramen. Although the location by the station makes it convenient to find and get to, if you drive, or even ride a bike there, you'll be hard pressed to find parking nearby. If you like Chinese food, give them a try.
View on GoogleA work friend who’s a local recommended this restaurant and told me that they have been there for decades. It was very popular and always has long queues. We went there for dinner just before the peak hours. We ordered shrimp fried rice, pan-fried gyoza, oil soba with wontons. Everything was pipping hot and nicely seasoned but MAG was noticeable. The shrimp fried rice is fluffy and the gyoza vegetable filling was fresh and crispy. Just the wontons don’t have much filling and the skin broken quite easily. Staff and chefs are friendly. The family vibe is good.
View on GoogleCool popular hole in wall with big portions. Excellent every time I have eaten here. If you’re looking for a fancy place this isn’t but has a local charm all its own.
View on GoogleBest Abura Soba and fried rice…love it!
View on GoogleIt’s really basic with a not so basic price. Use coin parking nearby. Expect to wait at least 10 minutes. Not great ramen at all.
