Entering Yama no Oto was pure nostalgia: reminded me of the local kissaten /coffee shops which were everywhere when I first came to Japan more than four decades ago. Its low tables, furniture and ambience are all from that time, and I loved it. There was even an abacus rather than an electronic calculator beside the till. The coffee was excellent, and the cheesecake, which was the only cake on offer, was delicious. The older couple who run the place were friendly, and I thoroughly enjoyed my visit. Please be aware this is not a shiny new coffee shop, but for anyone who enjoys nostalgia, it is very well worth a visit. It's a couple of minutes walk from Kajiwara Station on the wonderful Toden tram line. Update May 2026. Tried the Neapolitan (spaghetti). Delicious nostalgic taste.

View on GoogleA coffee shop I've been visiting for about 6 years. Light meals like pilaf, curry rice, and Napolitan are delicious, and I love the sandwiches too. I recommend having the sandwiches toasted. The vanilla ice cream is delicious too, with all sorts of toppings rather than just ice cream. I've had coffee, café au lait, hot cocoa, and milkshakes, and whatever I drink, it's a space where I can unwind. Recently I often get a large serving of pilaf. The Napolitan is stir-fried in an iron frying pan, making it fragrant—this is the ultimate coffee-shop Napolitan. I hope this place keeps going for many years.
View on Google2025.6.20 (Fri), first visit for lunch. A coffee shop run by a married couple along Kajiwara Ginza-dori. If you order food à la carte, the salad is smaller (apparently a set comes with about twice as much). A large serving of the main dish is a reasonable +100円. The “Napolitan” has thick, soft, chewy noodles well coated in rich ketchup, with occasional fragrant charred notes whetting the appetite further. There's plenty of green pepper, onion, mushrooms, and bacon, without skimping. For classic coffee-shop Napolitan, this ranks very highly for me. The “pilaf” I had on another day mainly contained egg and small shrimp, with chopped carrots and green peppers and a little mushroom. Its Showa-era appearance and equally nostalgic flavor were lovely. I haven't ordered it yet, but it's also nice that the breakfast service (550〜600円) is available until 13:00. Incidentally, the shop's name is pronounced “Yama no Oto,” not “Yama no Ne.” 2025.9.6 (Sat), lunch visit. The mellow “beef curry” seems mild and sweet at first, then a piquant heat follows. Both the flavor and its nostalgic, elegant presentation in a curry sauce boat made me think a stylish Western-style restaurant downtown might charge nearly 2000円 (…strictly my personal opinion). To get curry like this for 850円 (even a large serving is 950円)!
