Modest storefront selling seasonal monaka & other traditional sweets gift-boxed for souvenirs.

Located at the entrance to the shopping street in front of 「梶原」 stop on the Toden Arakawa Line, which runs through Tokyo’s old downtown neighborhoods, our tranquil shop always offers more than 30 varieties of wagashi throughout the seasons, including daily fresh sweets, baked sweets, and premium fresh confections. In particular, 「都電もなか」 is loved and supported by many people, both locally and from far away. Our original sweets, born from the warmth of the old downtown, sincerity, and dedication to flavor, have also won numerous top prizes at the National Confectionery Exposition. 「都電もなか」 conveys the atmosphere of Tokyo. 「We wanted to find some way to preserve the Toden streetcars, beloved as a means of transport by Tokyo residents from Meiji 44 through the Showa 40s.」 That wish inspired the creation of this 「都電もなか」.…

This is a MUST STOP SPOT on the Arakawa Toden line. A fantastic little tourist destination that has some great souvenirs and yummy sweets. The adorable mini Toden boxed sweets make for one of the best memories of the line. The staff are super friendly and welcoming. It's a very short walk from a station, it's not to be missed.

「都電もなか」, popular for its simple flavor, can be purchased individually, starting with 1 piece. They also have an outlet at Matsuya Asakusa. Winner of the Minister of Welfare Award at the 20th National Exposition. In months 4~5, you can see spring roses along the Toden Arakawa Line. The stretch from Arakawa Yuen to Shako-mae is especially recommended. There’s a special charm to swaying along on a local streetcar too.

The 都電もなか main shop, 「菓匠 明美」, is a long-established wagashi shop in Horifune, Kita. It’s near the entrance to the Kajiwara Ginza shopping street, about a 2-minute walk from Kajiwara stop on the Toden Arakawa Line (Tokyo Sakura Tram). I stopped by while walking along the Toden Arakawa Line from Minowa toward Oji. There, I bought the famous 「都電もなか」 my family had asked for. The Toden-shaped monaka contains chunky azuki bean paste and gyūhi and was quite substantial. The packaging also features Toden designs, and I chose 4 of the seven individual wrapper designs. My partner was delighted and said they used to eat these often as a child.

【What I had】 都電もなか 185円 【Impressions】 If I remember correctly, 都電もなか had about 8 or 10 packaging designs, but only 1 flavor, so if you want to collect them all, you’ll need to buy that many pieces. I don’t know much about them, but when I hear Toden, I picture green. Inside is a long, box-shaped monaka modeled after a Toden streetcar, with bean paste and gyūhi inside its fragrant toasted shell. It was a monaka shaped like a beloved local symbol. Thank you for the food.
