I went in the early afternoon. They're labeled as gray wolves, but according to the on-site sign, they seem to be the subspecies European wolf. This is the only zoo in Japan that exhibits them. Other zoos mostly exhibit timber wolves, and otherwise Chinese wolves and Arctic wolves. One was relaxing on top of the rocks. It was in a blind spot from the glass on the Przewalski's horse enclosure side, so many people didn't notice it. Also, two were sleeping inside the animal house.

2023.9 I've been about 3 times, but my impression is that more often than not they're hidden and you can't see them up close. The English sign says "GET WILD" in big letters. There's a Japanese sign next to it too; I only skimmed the English, but it seems to say something different from the Japanese.

They rarely showed themselves. They move swiftly through the thicket. This is a photo I took when there was some sound. It looked like the dog we used to have at home (⑉°_°⑉)

I went in the early afternoon and it was sleeping; just when I thought it had gotten up, it hid in the shade of the grass on the opposite side from the glass window. Sometimes it's in a spot that's a bit hard to see from both the glass window side and the Przewalski's horse enclosure side, so it's down to luck (I think that can't be helped, though...)

I visited on a rainy day, so none could be seen in the open area. There was one wolf in the building at the back, but it was absorbed in watching the keeper prepare food and wouldn't look our way.
