Restaurant Tsukushiya Visited 25/11/03 at 11:40, 1 customer already there Ordered the reba-nira (liver and garlic chives) set meal for 700 yen Served in about 5 minutes. At the 700-yen lunch price it comes with rice, miso soup, and pickles, so the value for money is amazing. Personally I found the reba-nira a bit salty, but the liver was tender and the bean sprouts were crunchy, and I enjoyed it as perfectly tasty. If I get the chance next time, I'd like to try the tendon or katsudon (both 800 yen).

I sometimes go there for lunch. There's no parking for cars or bikes, so it's for people in the neighborhood. What stands out is that it's cheap. How many places nowadays let you eat a set meal for 600 yen? Prices on par with gyudon chains. In that respect, you can feel the owner's spirit of service toward customers. But prices are going up everywhere these days, so I think it'd be fine to raise them a bit. I'll be back.

August 2021 After the Obon holidays I headed out for lunch a little late and went to a place I'd chosen for its sui gyoza, figuring it was unlikely to be closed—but to my surprise it was temporarily closed due to the spread of COVID, and my mind went blank. I regrouped, and while I was considering Kappo Inaki, what came to mind was Tsukushiya and its one-coin lunch. Running late, I got there around 12:00, sat at the counter since I was alone, and ordered the katsudon for 500 yen. This time's support points, out of 5: Originality: 3.5 Local ratio: 5.0 Visuals: 4.2 At this point, 4 of the 6 counter seats were taken and the 4-person tables were full, so it was crowded. It's a popular set-meal restaurant even when other places aren't closed, but right now I'd expect it to be even busier. Even with a backlog of orders from customers who arrived just before 12, it was served in about 10 minutes. Katsudon in a big bowl, miso soup, macaroni salad, and pickles—simple, but katsudon for one coin is amazing. Just recently Katsuya made headlines with a 490-yen (before tax) katsudon bento, but in both quality and quantity, the value for money here is in a league of its own. The portions have always been generous, but this time the cutlet felt thicker than before, and when I checked the photo it was about 1 cm thick. The sauce is on the sweet side, so I sprinkled on some shichimi. The kick of the shichimi went great with the cutlet and rice—delicious, thank you for the meal. Next time I plan to bring my own sansho, lol. —2020/02 I went to Okonomiyaki Tsukushiya for their one-coin 500-yen lunch. As always, the place was bustling with office workers. A wet towel and tea come right away. Maybe it's because the place is a home-and-shop run by a married couple—this value for money is surprising, and I don't think it's only because it's busy. That day I had the sweet and sour pork set meal. Judging by the vibe, I think it's the second most popular. It came out after a 7–8 minute wait. Pork belly fried into chunky karaage, cooked with plenty of black vinegar. It also had lots of bamboo shoots, carrots, onions, and green peppers. Taste, portion, and price were all very satisfying—thank you for the meal. —2020/02/04 At lunchtime it's always bustling with office workers. Having nearly every menu item at one coin, 500 yen, is something really precious in the Reiwa era. That day I ordered the katsudon. Probably the shop's most popular item. A huge portion and outstanding value for money.

Heading west along the Koshu Kaido in the midsummer heat. As you get farther from the city center around Hachioji Station, does the atmosphere change a bit? This place has a 500-yen lunch and a wide menu. (*From 2023, understandably, it's 600 yen) A little while after ordering, out came a properly freshly made sweet and sour pork set meal with a wonderful texture! The macaroni salad in the small side dish was chilled, the rice was generous, the miso soup tasted just right—no corners cut, to the point that I almost felt bad! It seems to be run by a pleasant elderly couple(?), and there seem to be lots of regulars. The next day, Sunday 7/11, they were closed—too bad. But if it means the two of them get some rest, that's not so bad either. 2021.7/28 Came back in a hurry between work. I'd walked there under the blazing sun, so I was glad it was open.. The karaage was freshly fried and delicious too. I always look forward to it when I have work in Hachioji, but who knows when I'll conquer the whole lunch menu. * * * July 2022 7/23 sweet and sour pork set meal 7/27 katsudon Between work, walked about 1 km each way under the blazing sun. I always look forward to it when I have work in Hachioji. Next up is the reba-nira set meal—aiming to conquer all 4 lunch items! * * * 2023.7/28 Reba-nira set meal. Set meals are now 600 yen. Again this year, I walked 1 km each way from the hall under the harsh sun. (I went in June too, but Saturdays had also become a regular closing day) Understandably the set meals are now 600 yen, but considering they cook everything carefully after you order, it's a steal! Maybe because of the heat wave? It was empty even at 12:30 on a Friday. The smell of the reba-nira being stir-fried really whets your appetite! With this I've conquered all 4 set meals, but a ginger pork set meal and a mapo tofu set meal have been added to the lineup, so next year for sure. Please stay well! (That day there was no mapo eggplant set meal)
