近どう 本店Kondō
Casual restaurant with individual table grills for monja & okonomiyaki pancakes, plus noodle dishes.
Founded in Showa 25, Monja Kondo is Tsukishima's oldest monja restaurant. Its famously stubborn proprietress was well known locally, loved for her dedication to work and her blunt way of speaking to customers. Ever since she began serving monja at the traditional candy shop she founded, we have preserved “the taste of those days” right up to the present. If you're going to talk about Tsukishima monja, try the monja at “Kondo” first!!

A popular restaurant in Tsukishima where many monja-yaki restaurants gather. There are many non-Japanese customers. Credit cards are accepted in addition to cash. ◎Oyster Butter Yaki Large oysters are dipped in butter and eaten. It goes well with bean sprouts. ◎Kondo Special It is fun to watch the process of grilling by the staff. A circle is made with cabbage and ingredients, and soup stock and flour are poured into the circle. When it hardens a little, mix it with the ingredients, stretch it out, and form it into a circle again. The aroma of the baking process is irresistible. After a while, the dough burns, and the flavor is also delicious.
View on GoogleNo wonder Kondō is so famous. Once you come, you will understand. But please make a reservation ahead. The food was delicious and service was nice. We liked it very much. I think I will choose Kondō again next time.
View on GoogleOne of my Tokyo trip highlights would be this, Monjayaki! This is so good 🤤 we ordered the monja- mochi cheese mentaiko (¥1,500), butter grill - squid legs (¥850) and dessert - anko maki which is the crepe with red bean paste (¥500) and several pints of Sapporo draft beer (¥600 per pint only!). Fear not if you don’t know how to cook/make the monjayaki. The staffs there are very friendly and they can help you to do it (though they can barely understand English). We arrived pretty early at the restaurant, at 5.30pm on Monday and we were their first customer! When we left the restaurant around 6.45pm, the queue was already very Long so be sure to go early to avoid the crowd.
View on GoogleThe oldest place of monja. Lovely no frills yet warm interior. The monja here is less “sloppy” which is not what I prefer but still interesting to see the different ways in which different stores will create. A recommendation is actually the okonomiyaki here. That was stellar.
View on GoogleA great place to try monja for the first time. This restaurant is on a street that is full of other restaurants offering monja, but this restaurant has gotta be one of the better ones where locals also come by and are really lively. If it's your first time having monja you can have the staff cook for you first and then choose to cook by yourself later if you are confident.
