I visited while exploring the Nihonbashi area in connection with Tsutaju. Ibasen is a 400-year-old long-established business founded by a merchant who came to Edo from Hamamatsu with Lord Ieyasu, and who, during the Edo period, began handling ukiyo-e, uchiwa fans, and folding fans as an ukiyo-e publisher. In the space next to the shop selling beautiful uchiwa and folding fans, they were displaying late-Edo-period ukiyo-e and ukiyo-e uchiwa. Since this shop itself was a publisher, there were unique ukiyo-e by popular late-Edo ukiyo-e artists such as Toyokuni III, Kuniyoshi, and Hiroshige that you can't see anywhere else! You can also see ukiyo-e of actors and beautiful women made into uchiwa and folding fans, woodblocks, and exhibits that change regularly (when I went, tosenkyo was on display). A staff member passing by chatted with me in a friendly way and gave me the OK to take photos. Afterwards I also stopped by the shop and was shown lovely folding fans and uchiwa. Since they're handmade, the prices are pretty steep, so what I bought, thinking "this I can afford!", was a clear file with Kuniyoshi's cat illustration. 😄 Visited February 16, 2026
View on GoogleNext to the folding fan and uchiwa shop. It seems to be the entrance area of a building. There aren't many exhibits, but it was a lovely place to peek into while strolling.
