・Saturday 10:30, 5 customers ・Chuka soba (950円) -------------- When I visited at 10:15 on a Saturday, there were 3 customers ahead of me. The interior felt very clean with a calm atmosphere, and people who seemed more like regulars than tourists were already eating ramen. I ordered the classic chuka soba. The moment it was brought over, the aroma of niboshi and chicken bone stock rising with the steam stimulated my appetite. First, a sip of the soup. The oil on the surface is piping hot, almost surprisingly so at first, but that heat keeps the soup from cooling until the very end, and as you keep sipping, the umami gradually spreads. There's the sharpness of soy sauce, layered with niboshi flavor and the richness of animal-based stock — it looks simple, but the flavor is remarkably deep The noodles are medium-thick curly noodles that cling to the soup extremely well. The moment you slurp, they pick up plenty of soup, and the texture is pleasantly chewy. They go in a different direction from the trendy low-hydration, snappy noodles of late, but I feel these noodles are definitely the right match for this soup. The chashu isn't the flashy type, but it has solid meaty umami, and the menma is seasoned naturally, not too strongly. Overall, my impression is a unified deliciousness that doesn't overassert itself. Before I knew it I was slurping the noodles intently and ended up drinking quite a lot of the soup, even though I'm heading to another shop for a second meal after this..... Ramen these days tends to compete hard on the individuality and impact of each bowl, but I feel Harukiya's chuka soba was packed with the reasons it has stayed beloved for decades. Thank you for the meal.

A new item from Harukiya, the famous chuka soba shop: Chashu Chuka Zaru 1800円, 2-portion noodles (same price for 1.5 to 2 portions) When it comes to chashu zaru, Manrai in Nishi-Shinjuku comes to mind, so I came wondering if Harukiya had finally tried its hand at chashu zaru. At last, the bowl arrives. I thought the neater presentation compared to Manrai might lack impact, but then jiggly, wobbly chashu keeps coming out in abundance. The amount is no less than Manrai's, but for chashu quality I'd give it to Harukiya. Every cut is very tender, and you don't get tired of eating it. The flavor also matches the soup (sourness, spiciness), and my chopsticks couldn't stop going back and forth with the noodles. It's also nice that the noodles are the same price up to 2 portions. Manrai's large serving is 3 portions or more and I can't finish it, so this balance is very good. The wari soup at the end was also very delicious. Harukiya's chuka zaru might become a great part of their lineup going forward. Visited a little past noon on a weekday. Bought a meal ticket and went down the hallway into the shop. The noodles arrived in about 10 minutes. This time I ordered abura soba. Apparently the ramen is famous, but I went with abura soba. I've never had the ramen so I can't speak to its taste, but the abura soba is good. I mixed it thoroughly with the sauce as I ate, and it's just plain delicious. The flavor is soy sauce-based and rich, just how I like it. Also, the curly noodles, rare for abura soba, coat nicely with the sauce, which is great. I'd like to go again if I get the chance.
