Arrived about 20 minutes before opening and there was already a queue of more than 10 people. The line kept growing, and the staff started taking orders around 10 minutes before opening, which helped things move smoothly. The restaurant is surprisingly spacious, and I managed to get seated in the first wave once it opened. I tried the limited-time bukkake udon with giant prawn and assorted vegetable tempura. The udon itself was excellent, but I felt that a simpler order might have showcased the quality of the noodles even better, as the set came with quite a lot of toppings. The tempura was also very good. The giant prawn tempura was fresh and satisfying, while the lotus root tempura had a delightful crunch. The place was packed with locals, and it's easy to see why it's so popular. This is somewhere I would happily revisit just for the udon.

Food: This was the best bowl of udon I’ve ever had. The noodles were thick, smooth, and incredibly chewy, with exactly the texture I hoped for from Sanuki udon. The broth was light and clean but still had plenty of flavor, which kept the noodles at the center of the meal. The bowl itself looked beautiful, simple, and exceptionally clean. The kashiwa-ten was also excellent, with juicy chicken inside a light, crisp coating that went perfectly with the broth. Service: They were extremely kind to us. The restaurant moves quickly, and we respected the pace, ate, and were in and out without lingering. Everything ran smoothly and never felt unfriendly or rushed. Summary: Easy 5/5. Simple food executed at an incredibly high level and easily one of the most enjoyable meals we had in Tokyo.

We lined up and waited for 25min which wasn’t an issue because we were open to wait to get in. But I got disappointed that we were doing the line at 12:30pm and they 1) Were sold out of tempura shrimp 2) Had no Beef Udon . This was less than 2 hours from opening ! I asked why there was no beef option and the lady couldn’t answer back - it wasn’t sold out, but there was no availability kind of the schroedinger cat. Having said that, the food was fine and I think that’s because we had to order a dish which isn’t the reason most people go there. We ordered the chicken tempura which was good. The staff recommended a simple Udon- was plain so nothing flavoring to highlight. Also they don’t let you share a dish and this isn’t mentioned anywhere while we waited. Additional note: it’s cash only So average experience if the best selling dish is not there… My recommendation: don’t do the line and check with the lady if they are sold out of their best dishes. If they are then I wouldn’t neither pay again or wait 25min

Showed up just after open and the first seating had been filled and a short line was starting to form outside. The seats turnover quickly and they are really efficient so I only had to wait 15 minutes. They take your order while waiting. I tried the Hiya-Kake Udon, shrimp tempura, and chicken tempura. Everything was excellent. The noodles had a great bite and were extremely chewy and the broth was delicious. The tempuras were fresh, hardy, and crispy. I understand why Maruka has endured as one of Tokyo's best udon restaurants. The service was friendly and efficient. The inside of the restaurant was packed with a few rows of tables full of people locked in on their bowl of noodles. Many happy noodle slurps were had and I'm already thinking about my next meal here!

The Rondo of Heat and Ice in Jimbocho When you pair "Kamatama Calpis Butter" with "Hiyashi-Kake" at Maruka, it is no longer just a meal—it becomes a perfectly choreographed performance of flavor. First, the Calpis Butter: a dynamic richness where the pure white veil melts over piping hot noodles, intertwining with egg and black pepper. The refined, dignified depth unique to Calpis Butter is genuinely sensual. Then, a complete shift as you reach for the "Hiyashi-Kake." The chillingly clear iriko (dried sardine) dashi vividly yet gently subtracts the lingering richness of the butter from your palate. An intense, sweet indulgence followed by an overwhelming silence. In this beautiful pendulum between hot and cold, my taste buds completely surrender.
