Renovated 1969 gallery housing Japanese art created since the start of the Meiji period (1868).

The National Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo (MOMAT) stands close to the Imperial Palace and is Japan's first national art museum. Its greatest feature is its collection of about 14,000 works, one of the largest in the country, including 18 Important Cultural Properties. It holds numerous masterpieces from the late 19th century to today, including works from overseas. The collection exhibition "MOMAT Collection" (Collection Gallery, 4th–2nd floors), which displays around 200 carefully selected works each exhibition period, is the country's foremost exhibition, letting you see over 100 years of the history of Japanese modern and contemporary art all at once. The surrounding area offers an environment where you can feel rich nature and Japanese culture, such as the Imperial Palace, Kitanomaru Park, and Chidorigafuchi, so we also recommend taking a stroll along with your visit. Very affordable entry and beautiful collection. A great way to kill a couple of hours when it’s baking hot outside as the gallery is nice and cool. I bought the basic entry ticket for 500¥ and was very satisfied with what I was able to see. I also got to enjoy the ‘room with a view’ which was a great way to appreciate the imperial palace and escape the sunshine

Wow, I had no idea what to expect, but if you are a fan of paintings, then this place will wow you. Japanese paintings have such a distinct ~ sort of ~ cartoon influence? The colors and textures were unlike anything id ever seen. You can also blaze through in an hour. Highly recommend!

Great museum. The building was stunning with great views. The selection of art was fantastic and the gallery was very well curated. I would highly recommend visiting here along with the Imperial Palace Gardens as they are right next to each other. The art gallery is very relaxed and has affordable admission fees

Great museum. I'm not familiar with the artists and their works, but I had a great time walking around this museum and viewing all the different kinds of art. I loved sitting in the room called "A Room With A View", amazing views of the imperial palace grounds.

Great art museum. Saw the Kanzan exhibit and the permanent exhibit 2000円 total. Amazing art. Kanzan exhibit had audio guide for 800円。 Overall a great experience. The building isn't an architectural marvel like other art museums though.
