A long-established yoshoku restaurant apparently frequented by 夏目漱石. Although the dishes are classics, each has a little thoughtful twist and is very delicious. The kaki fry, katsuretsu, and omurice were exquisite. I'll return. 【Returned 2018.5.11】 Ordered カツ丼 and 西洋かき揚げ. The カツ丼 was juicy, fried in homemade lard, making it juicy and amazingly delicious. Yet not heavy! The pickles served alongside were also homemade, long-aged nukazuke, and very delicious!! Worth ordering separately just to eat them. I ate the 西洋かき揚げ with pepper. The chunky meat and concentrated onion sweetness were very delicious. None use unnecessary seasonings, so they don't have unusual, quirky flavors. But they're all made with such care that they're truly delicious, and even after eating a lot, once you settle down you want more. That kind of dependable flavor. 【2018.12.17】 I've lost count of my visits, but every time I still wonder, “What should I have today?” Because everything is perfectly delicious. It's fun to come with friends, order several dishes, and share. I love the atmosphere as well as the taste. The チーズオムライス recently added to the menu is truly delicious too!

Stopped in for lunch after visiting a client's company! (*´∇`*) 松榮亭, a historic yoshoku restaurant opened in 1907! The storefront was impressive, but the owner was running everything alone! No queue, and I was shown to a table! Their famous dish is 洋風カキアゲ, apparently something 夏目漱石 ate! I ordered the signature 洋風かきあげ! There were 5 customers ahead of me, and it arrived in about 15 minutes! The 洋風かきあげ was huge! ∑(゚Д゚) Rather than kakiage, a rock! It looked like a rock! Did 夏目漱石 think it looked like a rock too? (*´-`) The recipe is unchanged from back then; the ingredients are apparently meat, onion, eggs, flour, salt, and lard! Pour on Worcestershire sauce and eat with a knife and fork! The fluffy egg texture and pork were gentle on the palate—more like a pork omelet than kakiage! Lighter than it looks and delicious! The consommé soup was simple and gentle too! Enjoying Meiji-era yoshoku felt like traveling through time—such fun! Thank you for the meal!

The selling point here isn't the taste, but the service and attitude toward customers. First, whether they'll even speak to you at all (sometimes questions go unanswered). Then, whether you can get in (sometimes you're turned away at the door). Next, whether you'll be served the dish you want... (sometimes you get scolded). There are various other things, such as dishes that aren't very clean (perhaps that's the pattern), and flavors on par with a chain restaurant (that's a compliment), but depending on your mindset you might enjoy it. After all, how often do you get to pay to experience service like that? For the record, I didn't enjoy it.

2022.1 .19 I went today, but there was a notice saying they were closed for long-term medical treatment. I hope they reopen soon. --- They're famous for 洋風かき揚げ, but today I had the ロースカツ and ハンバーグ set with soup and rice. 1100円. Quite a generous portion. The ハンバーグ comes with demi-glace sauce, letting you enjoy the flavor of ハヤシライス, so it feels like a bonus. The ハンバーグ was so soft it fell apart. Personally I prefer a slightly firmer type, but it was delicious. The ロースカツ was also large, freshly fried, and delicious. This meat was a little firm. The potato salad side was tasty too. This really is a good place for fried food. You eat it with the Worcestershire sauce on the table. At first he seemed unapproachable, with a stubborn old-man air, and told me to wait outside. He limits customer numbers and handles everything alone, so if he can't serve you immediately, he asks you to wait outside. Soon I was called to a single seat. He asked if it was all right to seat customers at the neighboring table. He seems to prefer leaving 1 table empty between customers where possible. He went around refilling water, and when the person beside me asked for chopsticks, he kindly replied, “Sorry, I'll bring them right away.” When I paid, he also apologized for keeping me waiting. Contrary to the initial impression, I think he handled customers properly. He said they're only serving lunch now. 2021.11.26

After a long closure following the owner's injury, they've reopened for lunch only. They're not necessarily open Monday–Saturday; closures are irregular, depending on the owner's health. Only the displayed menu items are available. But interacting with the brisk, lively owner is fun. As it's a one-person operation, allow plenty of time for your visit. In any case, congratulations on reopening.
