Beer restaurant "Schmatz," serving authentic German craft beer and modern German cuisine, is a brand that started when founders Christopher Ax and Marc Lütten began a food truck selling German beer and German sausages. With "tradition," "evolution," and "originality" as its pillars, the food lets you enjoy a new style of German cuisine based on the present-day German flavors the German founders grew up with, with a casual Japanese touch added. Authentic beer brewed using traditional methods in accordance with the German Beer Purity Law, using only four ingredients: malt, hops, yeast, and water. So that you can always enjoy it fresh…

After a long day braving Tokyo’s heat and wandering the city, we stopped here hoping for nothing more than a “quick” beer to recharge. The place was empty, just the two of us and five waitstaff with seemingly little to do. Despite that, our very simple order turned into confusion: they double-checked it three times, and at one point even asked if we wanted two rounds of the same drinks at once (one set for me and another set for my friend). When the drinks finally arrived, they came with a small plate of cold cuts. At first, we thought this was a kind gesture. Unfortunately, it turned out to be a hidden charge: two tiny slices of ham added to the bill at a surprisingly steep price. We didn’t want to cause a scene, so we paid and left… but it left a sour taste. It was disappointing not only because of the service, but also because it’s something you would not expect from a genuine Japanese establishment (ironically, none of the staff appeared to be Japanese). For tourists, especially those traveling on a budget, transparency matters. A simple drink stop shouldn’t feel like a trap.

Very nice. Accidentally discovered this place on the last day of my 2 week Japan trip. A Weizen and tasty Käsespätzle was a nice thing. Staff was quick to bring stuff but took a while to react. Else this was great, thank you very much.

If you are german and want to experience german food in Tokyo, you’ll be really disappointed, as you will quickly realize that the food they serve you here isn’t like at home. Although one can argue, that they had to adapt some of the dishes to the Japanese taste, which is obviously the main target group. Additionally the prices are three times as high as in Germany. To charge ~1000 yen for a single Wiener with some sauce on it and call it a Currywurst is just „Unverschämt“, as we would call this in Germany. At least the beer they serve here isn’t bad, but overpriced too.

The fork was extremely dirty, totally unwashed and dirt was dried up. I had a picture but apparently deleted it. The food was quite boring, only sausage was good, but it's hard to spoil that. They didn't offer any discount or bonus after we told them about the cutlery issue.
