An exceptional eating experience. Expect long wait times to eat here for lunch, but I promise you it is absolutely worth it. Please eat here. Additional details below. The katsu curry is truly, truly delicious and a must order. There are wax model bowls on display to show you what's available, and a server will eventually greet you in the queue to confirm your order so that is basically ready to serve when you are seated. The dining area is small and the seating is limited. If you are coming as a group, please let that server know that you are okay with being separated. I can't comment if there's a time limit enforced, but this isn't a dine and chill establishment, consider eating promptly and move on for the consideration of others.

Well-known curry area and is truly one of the legends. We waited almost an hour, but it was absolutely worth it. The balance of crispy fried pork, rice, and rich curry was perfect. A must-try for curry lovers-Japanese style! *cash only!

Jinbocho is a graveyard of intellect, a labyrinth where millions of pages whisper of history, philosophy, and quiet contemplation. But step inside Nankai Kitchen, and that delicate, literary illusion is instantly shattered by the brute force of survival. The air here is heavy, smelling sharply of scorching lard and raw urgency. There is no polite chatter; the room is governed by an oppressive, unspoken silence. Around the counter, men with hardened hands and dirt-flecked boots lean low over the bar, their eyes fixed entirely on the counter as if watching an enemy line. They do not eat; they consume with a desperate, rhythmic violence, weaponizing their spoons against the impending collapse of the afternoon. Then comes the plate—a cold expanse of stainless steel bearing a mound of rice submerged beneath a terrifying, pitch-black curry. This is no comforting home-style sauce. It is a dense, bitter, unapologetic abyss of spices and rendered fat that smells like industrial machinery and old earth. When the cutlet is stabbed, the crunch echoes sharply through the tense room like a warning shot. To sit here is to submit to a culinary interrogation. The black curry demands absolute focus, stripping away your civilized veneer and leaving you trapped in a sweat-soaked arena where the only law is to eat, endure, and survive the heat of the trench.

Pretty solid old school katsu curry joint. Curry taste was very, very mild making it easy to eat. Shop is tiny, about 15 seats so there is always a line. Best if you go after after the lunch rush or exactly when they open up in thr afternoon.

I arrived at Kitchen Nankai around 11am a few Thursday’s ago. By the time I arrived the line was about two dozen people deep. I believe Nankai has about 14-16 seats inside. The staff would come outside every few minutes to take orders. I went with the crowd favorite that mostly everyone else was ordering…a katsu curry. I was finally seated around 11:45am. The katsu curry was delicious and plentiful. The pork cutlet was freshly fried and the curry made it even better. I can see why this place is popular with regulars and salaryman. At 900 yen you got a good amount of food that tastes great. I will always love shokudo restaurants like this. Kitchen Nankai in Jinbocho is a must visit if you’re in Tokyo.
