The building is cool and the owner is kind so I think that is why there are many good reviews. However the food is surprisingly expensive and basic. In the soup there are only a few pieces of the good ingredients. For example, the soup ingredients are made up of about 50% onions/leeks but then there is just 1.5 thin slices of carrot per person. The greens in the soup are also probably leeks. They also forgot components of the soup and part of our order. The sake was good though. The price is also not possible to understand beforehand, but looking at the receipt it seems there is a 500 yen per person table charge, and also an upmark on some items. For example, 2 servings of udon noodles (to put into the soup at the end) seems to have cost 1500 yen. Also they allow smoking without having proper ventilation.
View on GoogleWe went to this restaurant not speaking any Japanese but the owners were so friendly, helped us with the dishes, explained how to eat it as good as they could and in the end even gifted us a poster and a ranking list in kanji that explained their sumo champion history. The restaurant itself is very traditional and super interesting to look at, we had a great evening with good chanko and felt very welcomed.
View on GoogleA very atmospheric chanko restaurant. The interior offered Edo period dining experience. Ingredients were really fresh and I would never expect a chanko restaurant serve such incredibly fresh sashimi. The tuna melted in the mouth. The old couple running the restaurant was extremely nice and kind.
View on GoogleSuch a nice hole in the wall restaurant. It doesn’t look like a restaurant would be here. The staff were so friendly and the decorations and ambiance were so unique. The food was very filling and healthy. I would totally recommend eating here if you are near Akihabara. It’s a 5 min walk to the main area and has way better food than other places around there.
View on GoogleWonderful hospitality and atmosphere. The father is a former sumo wrestler, his son runs the kitchen. Chanko Nabe had a great broth with hints of umami and slight citrus notes. Ingredients were fresh and high quality. Rather expensive, but worth it for special occassions.
