We offer matcha sweets, matcha beer, and more. At "Restaurant 1899 Ochanomizu," which has open terrace seating in Kanda/Ochanomizu in the heart of the city, the gentle aroma of Japanese tea from a tea incense burner and a tea kettle used back in our ryokan days welcome you. JAN 2026 Visited here for dessert after dinner and ordered a green tea parfait and a cold green tea sencha using the QR code on the table. My order came within ten minutes which was quick. The sencha was served in a pot with a few ice cubes inside to keep it chilled; it was nice and refreshing with a mellow depth of flavor; and the matcha warabi mochi which came with the sencha was pretty good. The green tea parfait was colorful, layered with fresh cream, matcha ice cream, pudding and cake sponge, paired with traditional Japanese sweets which included anko, kuromame and chestnut. There was also crispy rice puff for some texture as well as berry sauce which was not too tart. Enjoyed all the components of the parfait, especially the matcha ice cream which was rich and strong. Overall a nice place for some quality green tea and matcha parfait at a reasonable price.
View on GoogleExcellent service, dishes prepared with great care and refined flavor. A good option for a relaxed, high-quality meal. Courteous and attentive service.
View on GoogleSolid 4.8 stars, not quite 5 stars because nothing is ever perfect :) We came on a weekday around lunch time and even though there was lots of seating, we had to wait since there were reservations. It didn’t take long though, we were seated within 10 minutes. Loved everything we had! The sea bream was fresh, the curry was flavourful, the cakes were soft and melt-in-your-mouth, and the drinks were not too sweet which we appreciated. We ordered everything at once, and they served the cakes first, which was a little weird since I thought it was a dessert item. Washrooms were clean and service was great. It’s only a short walk from the subway station.
View on GoogleA nice place to meet and hang out. The unique signature items here are the matcha and houjicha craft beers, but they also have a cool selection of tea cocktails and mocktails. The savoury food items were all right, but the desserts and drinks were outstanding. The best-tasting food items I had were the aji sashimi in miso matcha sauce, shrimp and tea leaf pizza, matcha sanuki udon, matcha gelato and matcha chocolate tart. In fact, the shrimp and tea leaf pizza could've been perfect...if it weren't served on a plate. One of the benefits of a wooden pizza board is it absorbs some moisture, so you don't instantly get a layer of condensation between your pizza base and the board, unlike regular plates. This is especially important for the thin type of pizza they're serving because it gets soggy very easily, so the centre was already soggy by the time it reached our table. Maybe adding one of those bamboo mats they use for serving cold soba between the pizza and the plate might have a similar effect of allowing steam to escape? 🤔 Anyway, on drinks, I enjoyed the matcha beer. It strikes a good balance between the tea and beer flavours, but the houjicha peach milk was definitely the star of the night. Fantastic texture and perfectly balanced, allowing all three flavours to shine. Delicious.
View on GoogleA little bit different... but quite enjoyable. Went here two years ago for a coffee, couldn't drink alcohol or eat anything because of a health problem but thought to return someday. And here we are. Best viewed as tea with everything tapas. Small plates for sharing rather than a main course meal etc. Various types of tea added to an assortment of food stuffs. Interesting perhaps describes it best. Polite, professional staff. Worth a visit but not the type of thing you would appreciate on a regular basis.
