View on GoogleThe Main Gate of the University of Tokyo's Hongo Campus isn't talked about on its own as a tourist spot as often as the Akamon, but when you actually stand in front of it, you immediately realize "this is actually the entrance to Todai" — an orthodox gate. The massive stone pillars and ornate iron gate present a bearing befitting a modern university, with a role clearly different from the Akamon, a remnant from the Edo period. If the Akamon is the gate that carries the memory of the Kaga Domain's upper residence into the present, the Main Gate is the face of the University of Tokyo from the modern era onward. Even in photos, the depth of the campus peeks through beyond the gate, and you naturally become aware of the axis leading from here to Yasuda Auditorium. Hongo itself is a place where samurai land and a town of learning overlap, since a modern university was placed on the site of the Kaga Domain Maeda family's upper residence, and the Main Gate seemed to represent the "present as a university" side of that overlap. When strolling around Hongo, attention tends to go to the Akamon or Sanshiro Pond, but taking in the Main Gate head-on changes how you see the whole campus quite a bit. It was an entrance that left an impression, including the everyday reality of people passing through this gate each day on their way to learn.

View on GoogleAn impressive gate with a real sense of history. A brick wall runs on and on, and then the gate appears in all its grandeur. The gate is symmetrical, with guardhouses on both sides.
