Honestly, I’ve never had delicious kakigori in Japan. The Japanese kakigori I’ve always had was just ice covered with food-coloring syrup, with nothing but an overly sweet taste. I ordered azuki beans➕mochi➕kinako kakigori. By the way, Japanese kinako is seriously delicious—kakigori➕kinako alone is so good I could eat it over and over all day. Now this is something you can call kakigori. The fantastic toppings go well with the ice. But the wait was really long, so considering the summer heat and how much time it takes, I wonder whether it’s worth coming... I wanted to give it 5 stars, but I waited two hours, so I took one off.
View on GoogleA sweets shop tucked away at the edge of the University of Tokyo grounds. The shop was designed by architect Kengo Kuma, known for his extensive use of “wood,” and is worth seeing. Its main restaurant, “くろぎ,” is a Japanese restaurant that has been featured in the Michelin Guide. This is its sister shop. I had “warabimochi.” The set drink was coffee, apparently chosen to pair with wagashi. Quite innovative. Seasonal flowers were also placed on the tray; this time they were statice. It came with kinako, matcha powder, and kuromitsu. The price was around 2700円, if I remember correctly. Just what you’d expect from くろぎ. It has the feel of a sweets shop for adults, and the clientele seemed calm and composed too. It would be nice to spend some relaxed time here rather than rush through. I also recommend taking a stroll around the University of Tokyo campus while you’re there.
