Affordable yakiniku (Korean BBQ) in sleepy backwaters, near Mikawashima (a short ride on the Joban line from Nippori or Ueno. An old favorite.

View on GoogleA long-established Korean yakiniku restaurant that retains an old-fashioned atmosphere, and I was surprised that every meat was of better quality than I expected. The kalbi and harami especially were tender despite being nicely thick, and paired perfectly with the sauce. With the added smoky aroma of grilling over charcoal, nothing you order is a miss. The offal is fresh too, with no odor and a pleasantly springy texture. The senmai sashimi was crisp and went well with the special red sauce. The side menu is also extensive; the tegutang soup has a great balance of umami and spice and is perfect as a finisher. The stone-grilled bibimbap was also loaded with ingredients, and I enjoyed it right down to the piping-hot crispy rice. With its Showa-era exterior and a somehow calming interior, it's easy to see why this place has been loved by locals for so long. I'd like to come back when I want to enjoy really good yakiniku at a reasonable price.
View on GoogleInsanely delicious tongue Visited the famous yakiniku restaurant "九里味" near Mikawashima Station. I visited around 6 p.m. on a weekday and the restaurant was already 50% full. This place is said to be especially famous for its tongue, and it lived up to the reputation. Thick-cut yet both chewy and tender, the tongue releases more umami the more you chew—a signature dish you should definitely try. The loin has beautiful red meat; when you put it in your mouth, rich meaty umami spreads, and the balance with the sweetness of the fat is exquisite. Starting with the kalbi, the other cuts are high quality overall too, and the special sauce carefully mixed in before grilling is especially superb, so you hardly need any extra sauce. It brings out the flavor of the meat itself to the fullest. The kkakdugi served as the otoshi has a refreshing spiciness that whets the appetite. The senmai sashimi is a fresh gem with a crunchy texture. To finish, I had the kalbi gukbap; the rich soup and moderate spiciness coat the rice, a bowl that kept me fully satisfied to the end. On top of that, a distinctive feature is that you can also have fish sashimi even though it's a yakiniku restaurant, and another appeal is that you can really feel the authentic Korean style. It's a place where you can enjoy authentic Korean yakiniku, and it's easy to see why it's been loved by locals for so long.
