About a 10-minute walk from the west exit of JR Kita-Senju Station, ”生そば 中川屋本店” is a soba and set-meal restaurant on the Sun Road Shukuba-dori shopping street. From the west exit, follow the street in front of the station toward Nikko Kaido (National Route 4), then turn right at the Don Quijote intersection onto the old Nikko Kaido. Pass the always-busy Domremy Outlet Kita-Senju, and it's a little beyond Kadoya, which sells 「槍かけだんご」, named after the story of a retainer of Mito Mitsukuni resting his spear against a pine tree at Seiryoji. I visited around 13:00 on a weekend. The two-story wooden building with mortar walls has a Showa-era appearance. Be sure to notice the 「中川屋本店」 lettering above the awning: the 川 is missing, and the 屋 is tilted. I passed through the indigo entrance curtain fluttering in the breeze. Inside there are about 18 seats at tables, with menus on strips of paper on the wall. When I said I was alone, I was shown to a table for 4. Though it's called a table for 4, it's Showa-sized and looks like it would be a squeeze with 4 people actually sitting there. Come to think of it, Showa-era apartment buildings had low ceilings too. Looking at the menu strips, prices are reasonable: mori or kake soba 500円, ramen 550円, and curry rice 650円. A soot-darkened poster that looks as if it has been there since the Showa era reads, “Soba power: prevent high blood pressure, prevent arteriosclerosis, recover from fatigue.” Sets with mori or tanuki include mini katsudon, shogayaki-don, asari-don, negitoro-don, yuba ankake-don, salt-grilled mackerel, or miso-simmered mackerel for 950円. In that case, there was only one choice. *Mini katsudon set 950円 With mori or kake An interesting sense of balance: only the katsudon comes with 「kake」 rather than 「tanuki」. I chose mori this time. The katsudon was probably made by simmering a precooked cutlet with egg, since it arrived with the soba in less than 10 minutes. That's appreciated when having lunch during work. The soba is extremely long, so be careful not to pick up too much with your chopsticks, as it becomes hard to dip into the sauce. The cutlet meat is thin, but the strongly flavored warishita makes the rice go down easily. A regular portion of rice might suit it better than a mini one… The soba cooking water is thin and lukewarm, but during a busy lunch break, that's fine. I hope they keep going with this Showa atmosphere.

●Today's menu ・Katsudon ¥750(tax included) ●Thoughts An old-fashioned soba restaurant at Kita-Senju Station in Adachi, Tokyo🍜 Today I ordered katsudon. It comes with miso soup and pickles. The pork loin cutlet and onions are enclosed in a thick layer of egg, with plenty of dashi poured over them🍳 The pork loin cutlet is tender and goes perfectly with the sweet dashi. The onions add an accent, and the dashi generously soaked into the rice makes this an excellent katsudon🤤 The exterior is old-fashioned, and the interior is full of long-established charm. You can enjoy soba, udon, and rice bowls, and the mini katsudon set is also recommended🌟 Thank you for the meal🙏 Everyone, please give it a visit⭐️ Thank you very much for reading today too! ※Prices and other details may differ. Thank you for your understanding.

A long-established restaurant standing quietly on the old Nikko Kaido. The stone paving inside and the natural-wood ornament at the front catch your eye. Perhaps because no one was there near 15:00 on Sunday, the 5 tables felt relatively spacious. I ordered the mini katsudon set, and it arrived in just under 10 minutes. The mori soba had a good, distinct aroma, wasn't slimy, and had a nice bite. The dipping sauce had a strong bonito aroma and a refreshing bitterness from the flakes, without being salty. The katsudon looked rather dark because of the deep color of the kaeshi, and the rice wasn't soggy. The pickles already had soy sauce on them, which is unusual these days and made me happy. They also serve Western and Chinese dishes, making this a place I'd like to visit regularly.

I stopped by on Thursday at lunchtime, on my way from Kita-Senju Station to the library. I ordered soba + asari-don. The soba was classic soba. The rice grains in the asari-don were firm and distinct, and went down easily with the clam juices. At 950円, it's reasonably priced.

I had the zaru soba set for 950円. Well, it wasn't incredibly delicious or anything. There is no air conditioning inside. The floor is uneven concrete. An old-fashioned soba restaurant.
