This museum is basically a summation of the Expo held in Osaka in 1970. Having visited the Osaka Expo in 2025 in some ways this was a more relaxed and interesting experience. Having such a diverse assortment of displays under the one airconditioned roof all for 780 yen makes it an essential add on to the Tower of the Sun if you're out this way. As someone who's not a great fan of museums this was one of the better ones I've been to in Japan.
View on GoogleI'd heard about this museum after seeing one of their traveling exhibitions, and finally had the chance to see the museum itself. I was unprepared for the depth and breadth of both their gorgeous collection and exhibition space, conveying what is it to be human given circumstances and place. Some regions may be covered more than others, but special galleries focused on language and musical instruments are also included. Presentation of artifacts is subtly up-to-date, covers a variety of methods including actual built structures, videos and hands-on experiences, and strives to provide context whenever possible. It's a lot to take in in one visit but do save mental space for the Ainu and Japan galleries at the end. There are also special video pods that provide additional context. The special exhibition hall to the side of the main building gives this ace team of curators space to show off. At the time of my visit, there was a show on boats, a subject I thought I had only moderate interest. I soon changed my mind -- stunning ethnographic examples from all over the world accompanied by compelling videos of their use. At the end of the exhibit was a gallery focused on boats that carry us to the afterlife, a moving conclusion that reminds us of the importance of boats in all of our lives. A treasurehouse of inspiration. It's a bit removed from central Osaka but the transfer to the frequent monorail is clearly marked -- just follow the blue line. With plenty of in-park eateries and a shopping/entertainment complex across from the station, it's easy to make a full day of it.
View on GoogleThis is one of largest Museum of Ethnology in the world. They have so many collection and collaborative research. They also have special audio section for visitor to learn more about specific issue present by expert. The interesting part is they have evaluation card for children visitor, explaining collection
View on GoogleVast and comprehensive exhibits collected all over the world. Well-organised and categorised with plenty to see. Its one of those places that you can spend the whole day walking around yet still feel you have not yet seen it all… Extremely engaging and interesting, plenty of space to rest and ponder and stare at the exhibits… would encourage all to come and visit plus, you get to walk in the beautiful park to get here from the train station.
View on GoogleI recommend to start with Japan section, because it has really big exhibition. If you get there in the end you are already pretty tired for quality exploration. Overall, the museum is great and has information in English. Would be nice to have more interactive materials, but even without them it's great place to spend couple hours and learn something new🙂
