Good quality, afordable Sushi. English menu available. 1min from Toyotsu station. All the platters look great, but the Al carte menu is just as cheap. The red miso soup and grilled cheese salmon (I know what you're thinking, but give it a go) are the favs

I used to visit frequently when it was in Rokkomichi, and this is my first time at Toyotsu. But I liked it so much right away that I thought about going again the next day. First of all, the value for money is amazing. Lunch sets at non-conveyor belt sushi restaurants usually just gather cheap toppings, but Gontaro Sushi is different. *Please refer to the photo → Service Set 800 yen (8 pieces on the left side of the photo + miso soup) and Squid Zanmai 340 yen (4 pieces on the left side of the plate). All the toppings are delicious. The only thing is that the sushi rice lacks character or assertiveness. Maybe the vinegar is a bit weak. The grip is soft... but it doesn't melt in your mouth. Is it the rice, the water, the way it's cooked, or the way the vinegar is mixed? Well, I was hungry and gobbled it down, so I didn't savor it that carefully. Also... Miso soup and tea might feel a bit lukewarm to some people. But for someone with a tongue sensitive to heat like me, it was the best temperature. Next time, I'm planning to go for some daytime drinking with a bottled beer on the side.

Located right next to Toyotsu Station. The interior is small with only 10 counter seats. You can sometimes get sushi made right in front of you at the counter for a low price, so it gets quite long lines. I had to wait for about 20 minutes to get inside. There are set menus, and for a la carte orders, the system is to write the number of pieces of sushi you want to eat on the order form placed at the counter and hand it to the staff. You can eat freshly-made sushi that you can't get at conveyor belt sushi, and the freshness of the rice and toppings was also good. There is a student discount so students can eat even cheaper.

Today I finally got into this place where the counter is always packed with customers whenever I peek in. It's very reasonable, around 2700 yen for the Toyotsu assortment, two a la carte dishes, and two draft beer mugs. Even so, both the sushi and the a la carte dishes were satisfyingly delicious and very pleasing. Also, although the chefs and staff are all young, their phrasing during customer service was polite and made a very favorable impression. No wonder the counter is always full. I hope more Gontaro Sushi branches open up everywhere ♪
