This "kofun" — whether it's an ancient burial mound eroded and deformed by years of wind and rain and later human alterations, or just an earth mound built in later times, you can't tell by looking; a really ambiguous "kofun." But even if its authenticity is unclear, I thought a single laminated explanation sheet was a bit much. If Sakai City isn't confident it can preserve and maintain this site, maybe it'd be better to just do nothing at all. I found myself thinking, needlessly, that this area must be outside the World Heritage designation, huh.
View on GoogleA kofun that survives, sandwiched between V-shaped roads. According to the paper with the explanation, it seems it was cut away quite a bit but somehow survived.
View on GoogleA kofun so small you can't even tell anymore whether it's a kofun.
View on GoogleApparently this is a kofun too. (Though there's also a theory that it isn't.) If so, wouldn't it be better to put up a sign, set out a bench, and plant some flowers around it? But looked at another way, it may be a valuable kofun that shows how small and mid-sized kofun, if not protected, get cut away, weather, and disappear like this.....
View on GoogleThere's a theory that it's a kofun and a theory that it isn't. Locals say it wasn't a kofun, but I wonder which is actually true?
