天下茶屋史跡公園 is actually in 岸里 rather than 天下茶屋, isn't it? The closer station is the tram's 天神の森. This is said to be the place where Taiko Hideyoshi drank tea long ago while traveling from 大阪城 to 住吉大社. It's along 住吉街道, with 紹鴎の森天満宮 right nearby. I think it's a good place to walk while thinking about history. 阿倍野神社 and other sites are right nearby too, making it a fun place for a historical stroll. A lovely old road along 住吉街道.
View on Google「天下茶屋跡」 Toyotomi Hideyoshi stopped here on his way to 住吉大社 or 堺, and had Sen no Rikyu draw water from the tea shop's spring to prepare tea. It's said that because it tasted so good, he named the spring 「恵の水」 and gave the Meki family a red-seal grant of thirty bales of rice annually. Apparently, that's how it came to be called 殿下茶屋・天下茶屋. It was an impressive tea estate with a residence, tea room, well, pond, and more on grounds of about 5000 square meters, but reportedly burned down in the great Osaka air raid of 1945. It's in the name of a Nankai railway station, 「天下茶屋」 So that's its history. I learned something.

Apparently, it came to be called "the tea house of the realm" from "His Highness's tea house," after His Highness Kanpaku Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who enjoyed tea ceremonies. Only a camphor tree and an earthen-walled storehouse remain.
View on GoogleA single very large tree towers overhead. Apparently, this is where Toyotomi Hideyoshi had tea. It seems to have been a very spacious tea house. There apparently used to be a large pond and woods, but they're gone now.
