A beautiful kofun. The explanation board and the stone plaque at the tsukuridashi (projecting platform) gave careful, easy-to-understand explanations. At the top of the mound, stones were set in to mark the main burial area.
View on GoogleA really beautiful round kofun, turned into a park, and it's nice. It was built in the late 5th century, so it seems to have been made during the Yamato kingship a little before the Keitai dynasty. Probably around the reign of Emperor Yūryaku. Yūryaku maintained royal power through purges and military campaigns under an authoritarian regime, but after his death the Yamato kingship fell into great turmoil over the succession, and Emperor Keitai came in from around northern Ōmi or Echizen, after which royal power entered a temporary period of stability.
View on GoogleIt seems to be from the same period as the Uzumasa Kofun group, and since it lies to the northwest, it's nice to imagine it might be the tomb of the leader of the people resting in the Uzumasa Kofun group.
View on GoogleWhen you get off the Keihan Bus at the "Toyono Jōsuijō-mae" stop, you see a green hillock right in front of you. The sight of an ancient tomb so well preserved in the middle of a residential area is a little surprising. Would it be going too far to say I'm looking at the ideal we should aim for, where this becomes the norm? Stairs have been built up to the top of the kofun, so it's an easy climb. Looking around, it's the top of the highest hill nearby, which makes you think about the power of the rulers of that time.
View on GoogleIt was great being able to climb to the top and see where the coffin used to be The surrounding area is very nicely maintained.
