Abo Chaya Site. This place, 阿保茶屋, is read not as “Abochaya” but as “Aonchaya.” Since the Heian period, it was a key transportation hub at the intersection of the north-south “Naka-Koya Kaido” leading to Mount Koya and the east-west “Nagao Kaido,” and apparently there were several fine teahouses and it was very lively. At this spot stands the Russo-Japanese War Memorial, erected in Meiji 39, engraved with the names of the soldiers from Matsubara who went off to the Russo-Japanese War. In addition, in April of Showa 10, a memorial (chukonhi) was erected for the people of Matsubara Village who died in the Manchurian Incident and other conflicts. Also, to the south of these memorials is the Abo Chaya Jizo Hall, which enshrines a Koyasu Jizo, along with a record stating that it was rebuilt in Showa 4. These days, more and more people other than locals don't know the name of this place.
