It is not the first time I have come to a museum for the architecture, but eventually discovered something more than just observing the architectural design. The most beautiful thing about this place is that you can’t take pictures inside, and it makes you feel really connected to it. Set aside your phone and enjoy the spirit of the place while viewing the 11-meter-tall bookshelves with thousands of books. All of them are works by Shiba Ryotaro and materials he collected and read during his life. Walking around the museum’s garden, you can also take a look at Shiba’s house, but only from the outside. It was a great pleasure to learn more about Shiba Ryotaro, his role in Japanese culture and literature, and to be amazed by the architectural heritage of Tadao Ando. In addition, I had a pleasant conversation with two members of the museum staff, even though my Japanese is quite basic. The Shiba Ryotaro Memorial Museum is worth visiting and highly recommended for anyone interested in Japanese culture.

View on GooglePlease make sure to have about ¥1000 in cash to buy a ticket via ticket machine at the entrance, because it accepts cash only. The library room inside is impressive. Staff is very polite and kind. Although you not allowed to take any photos or videos, it makes you live the moment and remember the beauty with your own eyes only. A place where architecture and literature combined together.
View on GoogleMuseum built in memory of Shiba Ryotaro. Designed by Ando Tadao. 11m high bookshelves giving you the feeling you are looking up at a sea of books. Small pretty garden too.
View on GoogleThis is a masterpiece of Ando’s work, but they don’t allow any photography inside the building. I don’t know why but that’s the rule. The book shelf wall is astonishing. The Frank Lloyd Wright style glass window is a nice surprise. Every Ando’s book sold here in the gift shop comes with Ando’s sketch and signature.
