Utoro, Uji City, Kyoto Prefecture. The 「ウトロ平和祈念館」 was built here to share and carry into the future the memories and hopes surrounding the history of Japan and the Korean Peninsula, the history of Zainichi Koreans who have lived in Japan, and the Japanese and Korean citizens who have overcome various difficulties and walked together.

This is a fantastic museum telling the complex story of Korean migrants in Japan, the legacy of war and colonialism, and multiple generations of activism. We were amazed to learn how recently all of this happened and were grateful to be able to learn about it and to feel connected to Utoro and its people. The museum offers comprehensive English translations for all exhibits.

The history of Utoro is like a mirror reflecting the past we could not see. It is a story of war, colonial rule, and the power born through struggle and resistance. The path was by no means smooth, yet they endured with solidarity and with dreams for tomorrow. I hope their story will be remembered for a long time.

The Utoro Peace Memorial Museum is a very informative and welcoming place to learn more about the Zainichi community in Uji. The museum does a fascinating job of explaining the history of Japan and the Korean Peninsula as well as the history of the ethnic Zainichi Koreans who have been living in Japan. It’s a completely different and unique experience if you are taking a trip to Uji!
