Tucked away on the narrow strip of land between the two channels of the Uji River, this modest restaurant “Satori “ it feels almost like a quiet secret. We are in Kyoto perfecture ,from the map, the restaurant appears gently hidden removed from the main flow of visitors, yet perfectly placed within the natural beauty of Uji riverside. What awaits, however, is far from ordinary. We began with the yuba sashimi, Kyoto’s delicate specialty, silky and almost custard-like, carrying a gentle sweetness that speaks of freshness and restraint. It set the tone for what was to come: simple ingredients, treated with quiet respect. The soba followed in thoughtful variety. The Kujo green onion and fried tofu curry soba brought a deeper, more robust character, warm, comforting, and layered with flavour, yet never overpowering the integrity of the noodles. In contrast, the bamboo shoot soba was lighter and more aromatic, the earthy crunch of the shoots adding texture to the clean, well-balanced broth. We also explored the different styles of soba itself. The coarsely ground soba offered a more rustic bite, slightly grainy with a pronounced buckwheat fragrance, while the matcha soba introduced a subtle, elegant bitterness, lifting the dish with a refined Kyoto touch. Each variation felt intentional, showcasing not just technique but a deep understanding of the ingredient. Every dish arrived unassuming yet precise, allowing the soba to remain the quiet centrepiece.👍 Overall it was a overwhelming experience having discovered this hidden gem.

This was a wonderful find for us. The cold soba noodles paired very well with the dipping sauce (we tried both the buckwheat and the matcha noodles, both were great). But the real winner here is the tempura. All of the tempura including the shrimp and the vegetables were so well flavored. Honestly some of the cleanest, juiciest shrimp I’ve ever had. Highly recommend getting the tempura and soba noodle combo. The restaurant itself is really serene, we went for late lunchtime and it was super quiet with plenty of seats open that faced the river. Staff were friendly and attentive. Would absolutely eat here again if given the chance.

We visited SATORI (粗挽き蕎麦と里山料理 茶莵里) on 19/1/2026 and it was such a lucky find. We were actually planning to eat at another restaurant nearby, but it was closed. Instead of heading back, we decided to just keep walking all the way to the end of the pathway — and that’s how we stumbled upon this place. Total hidden gem. There were 5 of us and we were seated in a private room overlooking a Japanese garden and the Uji River. The view was so beautiful and peaceful, it really made the whole experience feel special. It didn’t feel touristy or rushed at all. I ordered the tendon bowl and the matcha soba — both were so, so good. The tempura was crispy, the flavours were just right, and the portion was actually quite big (which was a nice surprise). Definitely very satisfying. Service was great too. The waitresses were attentive and kept refilling our green tea without us even asking. Small detail, but it made a difference. Honestly, we only found this place because our original plan didn’t work out, and I’m so glad it happened that way. If you’re in Uji, I really recommend coming here. It ended up being one of our favourite meals there.

Stunning encounter! One of the best experiences we had in Uji. Overlooking the river, you can enjoy delicate tempura sets prepared with simple ingredients and made with so much love and heart.

Went in earlier today and requested for a river view but the server said that for reservation only. There were around 3 people sitting around that time. A few minutes after a couple of people arrived with clearly no reservations - Japanese and Caucasian, and they get seated in front of the river view. I requested if I can be transferred but the staff ignored me. It seems like they have preferences with locals and caucasians when deciding who to accommodate in that area. Service was a bit slow as well if I must say. Anyway with the food. It was ok - nothing special. Could’ve get a bang for my buck if I opted for the street food around the area
