Ancient Buddhist temple built on a mountain slope with a scenic hydrangea garden.

Since the Heian period, Yanagidani Kannon has been worshipped as a place to pray for the healing of eye diseases by people suffering from eye ailments, starting with the imperial family and court nobles. It is also popular as a hidden gem for hydrangeas and autumn leaves, and valuing "perceiving with the heart," it holds many events each season that satisfy the five senses. In recent years, it has become known as the birthplace of hanachozu. Nearby is the park cemetery "Yanagidani Seien," where you can remember your ancestors. Must be the most beautiful hydrangea temple I’ve visited so far in Kansai! Although the commute was a bit inconvenient (15-min taxi from the train station), I’d still highly recommend it for those who are struggling to choose which temple to visit for the most hydrangea bloom and display because it’s definitely worth the visit even just for once. They also have a beautiful hydrangea corridor like in Hasedera (Nara), but that’s not all. The interior was stunning with a wide floor for sitting and admiring the beautiful garden. The hydrangeas literally bloom in every corner of the temple so you definitely want to take your time here. This place also have a display of “umbrella sky,” where they hang lots of blue hydrangea-painted umbrella up high, definitely a stunning view to see. I went on a rainy day (June 20, 2026), and usually I would find it unlucky as taking photos is hard in the rain, but at this temple the flowers looked even more stunning and the garden was more vividly beautiful. Since I went during mid June, most of the flowers were already blooming and with the rain they looked even more colourful. You can also collect stamps at different points to create a gorgeous hydrangea art (similar to how it works at Katsuoji in Osaka) just by buying the stamp paper for ¥100. The hydrangea umbrellas were also on sale for a limited amount too if you want a special souvenir. 9/10 place (bc I gotta take the taxi🥀)

Beautiful Zen spaces and an authentic Buddhist Temple. A little further away from Kyoto town but connected by train or accessible by own car. Once at station you must grab a taxi at around 4200Yen return trip. Pay 1000Yen if you want to visit the little attic space with beautiful picture windows and would be absolutely stunning in Fall. We went in June so peak Hydrangea season which made the visit more enjoyable.

Visited in June to see hydrangeas and collect seasonal goshuin. They had many varieties of goshuin. Walked with friends from the bus stop, to the temple. It was fun!

Really lovely temple to view the autumn leaves. It's also very pet-friendly and the temple staff are friendly. It was also much less crowded than other leaf peeping spots (Visited Nov 30, 2025)

If you go in summer, you will see some of the most beautiful hydrangea displays. The entry fee is very reasonable and all of the grounds are decorated with pretty installations, and there were some food stalls too. The only negative is how inaccessible it is, as there are infrequent shuttles during the celebrations but they are often full. We had to get the train nearby then an uber to the temple, and when we were leaving we struggled to get another uber. Be prepared for crowds if you go in summer, but I would still recommend it.
